Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Coe, Jesse Miller, and Alexa Kent.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madison, Jesse, and Alexa. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
The first official show Rain On Fridays had was an acoustic set at Queen Bees in Downtown San Diego on February 22nd, 2018. It was one of the only times we played through pay to play (it was a total accident we did not know what we were doing). We barely got enough people to come so we could play our stupid acoustic 20-minute set on that Thursday night. It was brutal, but still really fun. From then, members joined, and members left.
An actual band started to form. It wasn’t just a vocalist with some basic guitar chords behind her. The first gig we all played together as a band took place this past May at SOMA San Diego for Girl Riot Night. After that, we started playing more and more shows, especially over the summer. Throughout these different gigs, we grew closer as a band, started tightening up are act, and met loads of other amazing musicians that we’ve all grown to be pretty close with.
Over the summer, after playing tons of silly house shows and summer-themed festivals, we decided to release our first single as a band. We, of course, didn’t know shit about how to record. We hit up our friend Carley Fischer, and for a cheap price, we got to have her record, mix, and master our song. It was quite the process. Listening to your song over and over again is a great way to test if you really like it or not.
Once “SOMA” was released, we started to gain more of a following. We had two other songs out at the time, but those were both just shitty recordings made with the Voice Memos app on my iPhone. Since then, we’ve been back on our usual business. We’ve started to create new music with a more distinct and cool sound. We’re hoping to really expand this next year and to meet more people and make more connections.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve had some difficulties between certain former members of the band — some past and present conflict resulting in complete destruction. But we’re young, and you can’t expect to start a band in high school and have it not almost blow up in your face over a dozen times in the beginning. It is hard to find the perfect mix of people. Some other struggles on the way have been facing things that are self-inflicted. Like anxiety.
There was a lot of anxiety to get past in the beginning. It’s hard not to feel stupid up there. And, the smaller the crowd, surprisingly, the worse it is. You have to learn how to try and get the crowd involved without shitting your pants on stage. Some people are really good at it. We’re an awkward bunch. I honestly think its okay, though. It adds some sort of character to the band.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rain On Fridays – what should we know?
We’re just a band. We specialize in jamming out on stage. We just all want to make music that makes people feel something. Like, we want to give people goosebumps, or make them wanna jump around!
We just wanna give people music that they can cherish and listen to whenever. I guess we’re known for the fact that were a completely female band now. I’ve noticed there really aren’t a lot of girl bands in the San Diego music scene. It doesn’t really bother any of us. It would be cool to see more girls around.
What we’re most proud of as a band is the fact that we’re all super passionate about the music we’re playing. We always want to practice and get better. We all put a lot of hard work and energy into the music we pump out, and that’s what makes us all so close.
The thing that sets us apart from others is probably are weird, not definable genre? Nobody really knows what genre we are. We don’t know what genre we are!
Genres are kinda stupid though. We like to mix tons of genres together. It sounds cool.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Vivianna Lopez are main homie and photographer! She has helped us create a look and a feel for Rain on Fridays through her photography.
Carley Fischer was the engineer on our first single! Without her, we wouldn’t have been able to make the song “SOMA” a success!
