Today we’d like to introduce you to Magely Martinez.
Hi Magely, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My makeup career started off at John Paul the Great Catholic University actually wanting to be a director for action movies! As I continued my film journey in college, I started to learn more about myself, my personality, and the new goals I had that still included film. As I would watch “behind the scenes” videos I had such a fascination for Special FX makeup and the magic of being able to create a story through makeup. One day I picked up a cheap palette and a brush and attempted a bruised face and the rest is history! I started to get known as the makeup artist most went to during college. At some point, I had others inquiring beauty looks and that left me stumped not knowing how to do makeup correctly, and after thinking about it for a while I decided to invest in more education at Alchemy Beauty Academy to learn makeup, hair, and business. Thanks to that school and my dad for helping me, my career has taken off since then, and with some hard work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth road at all. I graduated with a Bachelor’s on September 2019- meaning all the gigs I had lined up in 2020 were canceled. During confinement, I did my best to educate myself and network as I had time to, obviously. Since the restrictions slowly lifted, it meant that I had to look for day jobs to support my financial needs while still pursuing my goals to become a makeup artist for print and production. As any artist who’s passionate about what they do- I had to face a lot of rejection. I especially felt frustrated knowing many jobs and gigs would turn me down even with the education and experience I had with me to the point where I heavily considered changing my career. Thankfully, with enough strength, I had the right people supporting me to keep fighting and eventually became part of the makeup community during my time at Alchemy and now things are looking pretty good!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup and hair artist for print, production, and weddings. I love having the ability to be versatile in different fields of makeup- especially being able to do beauty and special effects. I also love being able to dabble in other areas like fashion and more! The most recent thing I would say I would be most proud of myself for is the endurance I have to hustle I was able to work in a production, photoshoot, fashion, and bridal in a week. It’s truly amazing to have the opportunity of working in many fields of the makeup industry!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
That’s something I think about often. I would usually follow up by asking, “Am I happy, do I feel fulfilled in what I do, and will this allow me to keep moving up?” I’ve been grateful to answer yes to those questions. Growing up I dreamt of having a job that allowed me to travel to beautiful locations, have the ability to meet new people, and make an impact on them. So many of the gigs I have taken on had given me some kind of feeling of success and not only that but assures me that it keeps opening doors for bigger and better opportunities!
