Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenzie Riley Odebunmi.
Makenzie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I loved drawing and painting as a kid, and was always met with encouragement by my parents to explore the arts. Some of my fondest memories growing up include painting surfboards with my dad. I didn’t know I wanted to be a graphic designer, however, until my second year of college. I had originally planned on being a nurse, but quickly realized that wasn’t the career I wanted. I ended up majoring in graphic design and it was truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From college I was able to land internships and design jobs that taught me different lessons about design and working with clients. I learned how to turn my love for art in to something very tangible for entrepreneurs and businesses. After not being fulfilled creatively by my prior design jobs, I decided to strike out on my own and went full time freelance about three years ago. I took everything I learned from my in-house design rolls, and applied it to my own business. I launched Studio Cleo this past January.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been lucky to have a relatively smooth road as a graphic designer. I have had some great connections and opportunities along the way that have led me to where I am. I’d be lying if I said it’s all been easy, though. I’ve had ups and downs with income and client work that have really tested me. I’ve struggled with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and have wrestled with comparing my journey to where others are. very human things that tend to bubble up to the surface as a creative. I’ve definitely struggled through the growing pains of starting my own business and have learned many great lessons the hard way. Through these struggles of trial and error, I’ve learned to give myself grace and take work lulls as opportunities to rest while I can. I no longer count my productivity as my self-worth, and that has been a huge accomplishment for me as a business owner.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Studio Cleo exists for the bold, world-changing woman. We are 100% dedicated to elevating female led businesses through branding, print and website design. We are so passionate about the way design can transform businesses, and work diligently with our clients to achieve unforgettable brand stories. As the founder of Studio Cleo, I’m most proud of who we serve and how we serve them. I think that is what sets us apart from other design studios. The women we work with are incredible, and I am so lucky that I get to bring light to their voices and businesses.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel steadfastness is the most important characteristic. With owning your own business, there will definitely be ups and downs to face along the way. To not only withstand the peaks and valleys, but to also learn and grow through them is what I believe to be the key to success.
