Today we’d like to introduce you to Malissa Schayes
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, my grandpa gave me a camera when I was 8yrs. It was a film camera and I was hooked. I could hardly wait for the images to appear on the film. In high school I fell in love with photography taking all the classes, learning how to develop and print film in the darkroom.
As for college, I went to Full Sail University in Orlando, Fl. Finding my place in the camera department learning all things film production. After graduation my family move to California.
For the last 25yrs I’ve been in the Motion Picture & Television industry as a camera assistant and member of the International Cinematographers Guild.
In between strikes, I decided to go back to school to brush up on the digital side of still photography & editing at UC San Diego Extension Professional Photography program.
Currently, I contract & freelance for companies and agencies doing Product, Branding and Marketing. Also, I shoot Set Stills and BTS working with video teams for Concerts, Events,
Corporate Events and Live Shows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Lol not always, I believe conflict builds character.
Starting out in an industry (at the time) were mostly males, I learned a lot. Learning to see things with a different perspective, having a good work ethic and persevering. Being true to
who I was ment to be and the abilities I could bring to the table.
“The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph”- William Ellery Channing
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love the creative process. Working with marketing teams, taking their vision and bringing it to life tangibly is exciting. When shooting products, drawing attention to detail and seeing the end
result in a catalog is rewarding. Honestly though, concerts & live shows are probably my favorite. Capturing the raw, split second, spontaneous moment excites me the most.
I would say “patients” is what sets me apart. Being able to wait for the right moment and capture the right shot. Being able to listen to the client’s needs and execute them.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As mentioned, I believe conflict builds character and character is your foundation.
Being able to persevere in trials, upsets or things not going as planned. Will build your
confidence in your craft. Also, ever learning new skills, keeping up with technology or leveling
up your vocation is always key for good success.
