Meet Marcela Celorio of Consulate General of Mexico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela Celorio.

Marcela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My role model was my dad, an attorney, and a wonderful, supportive human being. I followed his steps, and I became an attorney as well. I remember being restless all my life and I wanted to broaden my practice, to go beyond just Mexico, beyond borders. So, I found the perfect match: becoming a Diplomat. I have the chip needed to be posted anywhere in the world representing my country. I consider my self a citizen of the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was raised in Mexico in a Family of 10 children (7 sisters & 3 brothers). You can imagine that raising ten kids was not easy. But we were lucky to have a hard working Father that gave us the confidence to do whatever we wanted to accomplish, even if we don’t have enough resources. He taught me that the main resource was myself.

For me, as a woman, these foundations were very helpful since it could get challenging sometimes. For example, I had to fight a lot of prejudices, when I had this dream of traveling by myself instead of getting married or opening the spaces in a men’s world to become the first woman ambassador from my university.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a career diplomat with the rank of Ambassador of Mexico. Nowadays, I am posted as Consul General of Mexico in San Diego. The Consulate provides citizen services, assist and protects the Mexican nationals and also promotes trade and culture in a cross-border fashion.

I am proud about the fact that from the Consulate, I can represent my country, Mexico, I can lead by example and encourage the Mexican community to be better and to underline all their contributions to the United States, a country that is their home too.

Here in San Diego County, the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego is the only general diplomatic/consular representation recognized by the Department of State. That gives us a unique standing position that enables us to diligently represent our country and enhance the bilateral relationship US-Mexico.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is feeling and filling. Feeling that you make a difference in the world by lifting people up for them to seek higher endeavors and filling yourself with the conviction that you have what it takes to serve your community.
