Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Lowe. She and her team shared their story with us below:
Margaret Lowe is passionate about supporting pregnant moms and also passionate about making cross-cultural connections. Although she grew up in California, she has spent much of her adult life living in Cambodia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea.
While living in Cambodia, she researched local women’s birth experiences. She learned that the women from her village all gave birth without pain medication by necessity. However, they also lacked information on natural ways to ease birth pains and help labor progress. They frequently had difficult births where they felt alone and unsupported. Knowing from personal experience how much difference childbirth education and labor support makes, Margaret was inspired to become a doula.
Margaret has returned to California and is excited to offer compassionate doula care and practical childbirth education to families in San Diego. Margaret is a certified birth doula, certified postpartum doula, certified childbirth educator, and certified breastfeeding educator. She holds a master’s degree in language development, has studied 7 languages, and offers doula services in English and Khmer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s difficult trying to get my name out in the community and connect with potential clients.
When I was working in Cambodia, it was challenging to convince women that it really was ok to call me – day or night – when they were in labor. They were afraid of bothering me, especially if they went into labor in the wee hours of the morning.
As you know, we’re big fans of Green Pastures Doula LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in providing care to families before, during, and after birth. I love educating them on what they can expect, helping calm fears, and equipping and empowering them for their birth experiences. It is a joy to walk alongside them, provide support and coaching during labor, and to celebrate with them as they welcome their babies into the world.
In addition to providing support for typical families, I have a special interest in serving neurodivergent clients. Various types of neurodiversity, such as autism, ADHD, and OCD, are often accompanied by sensory processing differences. Giving birth is an intense sensory experience, and it is important to understand each client’s sensory needs and preferences to help them have a positive birth experience.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how beautiful San Diego is, especially the Mission Bay area.
It’s hard to come up with a dislike; this is a great place to live. I only wish it were closer to my family (in northern California) and my dear friends in Cambodia.
