Meet Marlene Recht and Sheryl Snyder of The Art Safari in El Cajon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlene Recht and Sheryl Snyder.

Marlene and Sheryl were born to create, with Sheryl an art therapist by profession, and Marlene involved in arts throughout her life. Art has always been their passion.

One day, they were having a conversation about the power of art in healing in everyday life, leading to their strong desire to share that with others. In today’s stressful life, creative outlets are needed more than ever.

To make it accessible to all, they came up with concept of a mobile business, where they could travel to different locations businesses and private homes, thus The Art Safari.

They bring all the materials and tools needed for each class, setting and cleaning up everything. Their materials are mostly up-cycled.

Their philosophy is “you can do whatever you want,” and there is no wrong.

Art is their meditation.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest struggle is focusing, as we are always working on different projects and testing our techniques. Creating is our strength and our weakness.

The business aspect and marketing has been a learning-as-we-go process, including classes through SCORE, social media, and word of mouth.

Since our approach is lower key, we’ve had to learn how to best approach people teaching them the monetary value of such classes and products we offer.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Art Safari story. Tell us more about the business.
Our mobile art business makes it possible for anyone to attend. In our classes, we are very hands on, ensuring that when the students leave, they are proficient in the technique.

We specialize in mosaics, mixed media, jewelry, embellished bottles. Mosaics tends to be the most popular.

When our students leave the class, we are elated in their successes and accomplishments.

Because we are compassionate and generous individuals, we are invested in this being a positive and gratifying process. Strangers come together and leave having connected on a creative level.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We hope to broaden our class locations. We are starting to do commissions. We are constantly evolving and learning in every aspect of the business part as well as the artistic part.
