Today we’d like to introduce you to Marshall Masser.
Hi Marshall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the pastor of Lakeside Christian Church and a member of the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team. I love the church and I love the mountains. I moved to Lakeside 19 years ago to lead Lakeside Christian Church. Immediately I headed to the Sierras and began by first climbing Mount Whitney in a day. Over the years I have backpacked over 2500 miles here in California. 10 years ago I had summited Mount Woodsen when I found a sign advertising an information meeting for Search and Rescue. A friend and I were beyond excited, took a picture of the advertisement and locked the date in our calendars. I was fortunate to be asked to become a member and found a great niche to scratch my itch for service and the outdoors.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Church leadership is always complicated because people are complicated. No church path is smooth, but it has been wonderful. As our church has grown, more and more people mean more and more complications. However, we wouldn’t trade a thing.
Search and Rescue is also a people business because it is a team. So, yes, there have been challenges, but they haven’t outweighed the blessings.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a pastor. People probably would say I specialize in preaching. I certainly enjoy it. However, I also lead a team. I vision cast. I counsel. I disciple. Sometimes I confront. I comfort. I marry. I bury.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find someone about 5 years down the road from you in success that is somewhat more successful than you, but not unreachable.
