Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Ibon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The first time I saw a cake pop, I was amazed at the details that could be created with candies and other sweet mediums. I was hooked and started collecting different candies in order to be able to create different characters. I never knew a baked cake ball, mixed with frosting, then dipped in chocolate and decorated with different types of candy could create, cute, complex characters and also be delicious treats!
I started to take orders in order to pay for my new hobby and creative outlet. When I got into the groove, I would bump up my playlist and get into the zone. It became a way for me to turn off all life’s noises and focus on creating magic. I found peace and tranquility in these cute confections. The end product was so satisfying because you were able to see your efforts materialize from cake to creation AND you could eat it!
Cakepops opened a door into other baking arenas in which I could expand my creativity. That led to my journey and love for french macarons. After months of perfecting my macaron recipe, I quickly loved how you can use macaron batter to create beautiful creations! During this time, Instagram just started and I would post my creations and found other bakers who also shared the same passion. This led me to discover the amazing talents of other baking artists who use baking as their way to express their creativity and their form of art.
I found inspiration in this wonderful and supportive baking community and it’s allowed me to expand my art into cakes and other delicious baked goods. After many years of toying with the idea of “this hobby,” I decided to turn my passion into a business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has had its ups and downs. Not being formally trained was a challenge and lots of online tutorials and late nights. But my amazing husband and son have been an inspiration to my work. Being a mom and having a creative outlet makes it all worth it. Regardless of the bumps in the road.
Please tell us about Moochie Pops and Cakes.
Originally, everything started out with Cake Pops. Hence Moochie Pops. But since then, I’ve expanded into a variety of other cakes, such as drip/multi-layered cakes, french macarons, custom cookies, and one of my favorites, Tarts! Which come in shapes, numbers, and letter. We’ve renamed everything now to Moochie Pops and Cakes.
My most proud moment is when my clients send me texts/photos from their events before and after. I love seeing the beautiful dessert tables they put together (before) and how quickly the desserts are gone (after).
What sets me apart from everyone else is that we’re direct to consumer bakery, offering a wide range of custom desserts that you can’t get at most places. I put a lot of time into the flavors, designs while giving everyone the convenience of modern day tech.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory was when my mom would come home from work with a new Disney VHS and I’d eat cookies all day.
