Meet Mason Fitzpatrick of Transform Photography in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Fitzpatrick.

Mason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Mason! I just turned 30 years old and am celebrating my 2nd year living in San Diego now. I was born as Megan until 24 years later when I started my transition to Mason. I was raised in Florida and moved across the country for a job to work with animals at SeaWorld. Sadly, the show ended up closing down a couple months after moving here but somehow, I had to make it work! As of recent, I made the scary decision to quit my full-time job as a manager/dog trainer and start my photography business. Being a trans individual, I wanted to base my business around being able to work with people of my community and using some of the proceeds from my business to give back every month to LGBTQ businesses and non-profits in San Diego.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think we can all agree COVID has thrown a wrench in all of our lives, some worse than others. I’ve been very blessed overall for many reasons during this extremely difficult time but I know how many others haven’t. Especially in our community. All I’ve ever wanted to do was give back and be a positive influence for others in general but especially within the LGBTQ community. It’s a slow start getting a business up and running right now, but I’ve got an army behind me helping me with whatever I need to make it work. I’m so grateful!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started my business wanting to work specifically with the LGBTQ community. I wanted to highlight the love, light and BEAUTY within the people of our community that may not have the ability to live comfortably as who they really are. Knowing that struggle I’ve always wanted to do what I can to remind people of how beautiful they are and sharing their stories because they deserve to be heard! I’m all about adventure, self-discovery and love! It’s a scary world we live in today for many reasons, it’s one of the reasons why I love being behind my camera so much. It allows me to not only see things differently but to share views of the world that others may not get to see. During COVID I fell in love with taking pictures of the city and all the beautiful places to see around here! I don’t want to just take a picture; I want to create lasting memories.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
To be honest, I’ve loved SO much about California and San Diego in general. Being raised in Florida, it can get pretty flat and boring. Yeah, we have pretty beaches but San Diego has everything. I’ve learned since being here that I’m definitely more of a mountain man. I love exploring cities I’ve never been to and there is so much to see and do around here. I think moving to California taught me how to fall in love with being by myself. I moved out here alone. Just me and my dog. I think she loves it out here just as much as her dad.
