Meet Matcha of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matcha.

Hi Matcha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for music started when I was young. Both my mother and father are self proclaimed “House [music] Heads”. I grew up listening to their favorite tracks and continued my love for music throughout my life. Music has been a consistent element in my journey, whether it be through creating it or enjoying in it. I found my adoration for Dj’ing after I moved to San Diego in 2022. I became a part of a community that was filled with incredibly talented people and naturally I was drawn to those who played and created music. After a dear friend of mine showed me what all those fancy flashing buttons do on the DJ Deck, I was hooked. Shortly after taking on DJ’ing, I began learning how to produce my own music and have been navigating my way through that long and rewarding journey. I am incredibly thankful that my life has become surrounded by music and allowed me to follow my dreams within the space.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like anyone who says choosing to become an artist is a smooth road, is lying to you. This road isn’t filled with clear directions that tell you exactly where to go, it’s one that you really navigate with your own sense of direction. Of course, there are many people who have set paths down before you that you can use to help navigate yourself to where you’d like to go, but you must begin to follow your own to get to a place that was meant for you.

As a creative, you are not just responsible for making your form of art come to life, in my case music. You are also responsible for your business, your marketing, your branding, your communications, your community building, and your self. It’s multiple full time jobs all bundled into one and yes it can be overwhelming but it can also be incredibly thrilling. Art naturally takes you amazing places when you follow its path. While it is an uphill battle following the dream of a creative life, it is filled with the most beautiful experiences.

So no it isn’t a smooth road but the most exciting ones never are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a queer Latino music producer and DJ. My sound is a high-energy fusion of Latin House, Baile funk, and Psychedelic Bass. I strive to bring community together through my music and events.I want to help my community unapologetically embracing everything they are.

What’s next?
I recently left my full time tech job to pursue my artist career full time and build my collective “Steeped.in.Sound”. This has given me the opportunity to focus all my time on building these two dreams. I have a lot of incredible music coming out and events that i’m organizing. I am really just at the start of my career.
