Meet Matt Faulk of Basic in Maker’s Quarter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Faulk.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The trajectory to founding Basic wasn’t a typical path. I was a pro-BMX rider, suffered a career-ending injury, and was no longer able to compete professionally. In recovery and with a lot of downtime, I had to consider my next steps.

During those BMX years, I really enjoyed working with brands through sponsorships, events, and ads. I was inspired by the way strategy and design came together to connect people. From that, I decided to pursue this new found passion for design and fell in love with the industry while developing my craft through self-taught instruction and failures (opportunities).

I built a thriving freelance career leveraging my personal contacts and slowly taking bigger and bigger jobs. Eventually freelance seemed limiting and I came to an understanding that this industry is about connecting to people. I decided I wanted to bring other people together and founded Basic with co-founder Erich Broesel, who had a small branding studio prior to BASIC.

When we think of our agency (now 80+ strong!), we see ourselves as a multidisciplinary group of creators, thinkers, and doers from around the world. Hustle comes from within and we have a shared passion for building brands. We aren’t big on hierarchy and we all contribute to our future. We want everyone here to grow as a professional, as well as an individual. Respect for each other. Share and learn from one another.

When it comes to the people we hire, we look for those with different perspectives and a deep passion for the craft, clients, and culture. We believe that when people bond through a shared passion and a relentless pursuit of better… great things come.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think I spoke to that previously a bit, but ultimately I try to see all failures as opportunities for growth.

Please tell us about Basic.
As a strategic partner, we craft brand-first digital programs, interactive experiences, and eCommerce flagships that differentiate and resonate in today’s consumer-centric, ever-changing business environment.

We also started a podcast called Brand beats. A design and brand agency podcast created by the team at BASIC, that looks to spark conversation around popular design topics, trends, and experiences.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Of course there are key moments of growth or clients we passed on.  I’m still learning and love the hustle.
