Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Simila.
Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always enjoyed real estate and decided to get my broker’s license immediately after graduating college many years ago. A couple years later a friend of mine and I decided to start a residential real estate sales company.
We had a decent amount of success for a few years but were derailed when the housing market began its now infamous crash in 2006.-2007. It became very hard to make a living in the industry around that time as there were very few traditional sales, most of the inventory was of the bank-owned, foreclosure or short sale variety.
I decided to make a make a career move in a different direction but always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to get back into the real estate industry at some point down the road.
In 2013 I met my current business partner at an elementary school of all places. My son and his daughter were in the same class so we would run into each other around the school from time to time. It turns out we both had our real estate licenses and had interest in getting back into the industry. The timing seemed right so we began to discuss the possibility of starting a new company and later that year Encompass Realty Services was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business from the ground up is never easy. It takes a lot of passion, determination and resolves to see things through, especially in the early stages.
It has been said that “sales cures all” which is certainly true. One of the challenges for any business, ours is no exception, is maintaining focus in the right areas and allocating your time to the right areas.
It is very easy to get off course and spend too much of your time with all the day to day minutiae of running a business instead of on the tasks and processes that actually make you money.
Although it can be a struggle, we always want to focus the majority of our attention and time on building our brand, cultivating our sales pipeline and doing everything we can to expose our services to as many people as possible both in our sphere of influence and the community in general.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Encompass Realty Services story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a residential real estate sales and property management company. We represent and assist buyers and sellers with their property purchases and sales needs. We also manage the property as many people own investment real estate and we assist them with all the things that go into being a landlord.
We pride ourselves on always being available for our clients and being personally involved in every transaction, start to finish. It is important to us that our clients know we will be with them every step of the way and be fiercely loyal in protecting their interests.
It is also important to us that we conduct all our dealings with the highest levels of honesty and integrity. There will always be opportunities to cut corners or venture into gray areas in this industry in an attempt to get ahead but we believe that doing things the right waylays a solid foundation for our business and will lead to long-term success.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The real estate industry is always evolving, driven often times by changes or advancement in technology. I look forward to seeing how these advancements might affect or change the industry going forward.
Things like artificial intelligence and blockchain technology certainly possess the capability to change the way we do business in the future. These technologies are in their infancy now but I believe they are here to stay and will transform some of the processes and systems in use today.
However, when you boil it all down, real estate sales is a relationship business. Buying or selling a home is a big decision for most people and can be very overwhelming at times. Having an experienced professional they trust and they know has their best interests in mind is an important component to creating peace of mind for buyers and sellers.
Ultimately, this is why I believe there will always be a need for real estate professionals that have unique insight, knowledge and expertise in their local market no matter where technology takes us in the future.
