Meet Maura Moed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maura Moed.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been obsessed with all things one would consider girly, for a very long time! As young as seven years old, I just loved to see my mom and my aunt get all dressed up to hit the town! I thought it was so cool how hair, makeup, and fashion could bring about such beauty and confidence!

As I got older, I dabbled and practiced with makeup, and by college, classmates were asking me to do their makeup before parties and functions at school. I also did some modeling and surprised a photographer who didn’t believe I did my makeup. He then asked me to return to the studio that weekend to work on two models. Once I was paid unknowingly, that is when I saw the potential and the power of the gift I had. I realized it could be a career, not just a passion or a talent. It was also so fulfilling to know my work could uplift someone who was having a bad day or simply just igniting a spark of confidence in someone. That is the ultimate satisfaction for me. I love to help others look and feel their best!

After modeling, being a news journalist, reporter/anchor, in management at MAC Cosmetics, I always needed makeup for it all. I also needed to connect with people, and in one way or another – help. I feel the path I’ve gone down in life so far has prepared me to be at this point now and living in my new title – LICENSED ESTHETICIAN. I now can offer a slew of services that will make people look and feel amazing!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. My significant other lost his mother and little sister to cancer about three years ago. That was tough, and then follow that up with a horrible assault incident that led me to file a lawsuit last year, then the passing of my father only months later.

Those are some hard times that test your strength and drive. Moments of depressions and deep negative ruts can leave you in such a negative space, to where you lose sight of your goals and the plan you had. Most would give up or simply be down, and unmotivated to keep pushing. I had to force myself out of that place.

I always believe in a silver lining. I managed to win a nice settlement in my lawsuit, and with that, I was able to enroll in school and get a jump start on my business venture as an esthetician.

Even then, as booming as the beauty industry is, fears of being in a saturated industry would bring about feelings of discouragement and uncertainty. It is very easy to get consumed with fear and not take the leap that is needed. You never know until you try, and I dug deep to pull out the faith and determination to follow my passion and my dreams. Being your boss is such hard work. Balance has been a struggle as I have a busy four year old son, a home I have to keep up, a relationship, my business to run. As an entrepreneur, you pour yourself into your business, and sometimes lose sight of the other things. Finding ways to balance it all is challenging, but very rewarding once you figure it out!

Please tell us about your practice.
I am a licensed esthetician, and I offer these services:
• makeup
• lash extensions
• eyebrow microblading & shading
• brow waxing & tinting
• facial treatments & chemical peels
I love to enhance the beauty that we are blessed with, and I do so in a very natural way, that still pops! I’m proud of simply staying true to myself, and always remembering why I do what I do. This is my livelihood, however, it’s such a deeper meaning and purpose to me than money is. This has allowed me to grow tremendously over the last three years, and build a great clientele so far. I gain trust and get to know my clients below the surface level – naturally. They feel safe and comfortable when they are in my chair or on my table. When clients can also become friends, it’s an amazing feeling. That connection adds so much value to me as the artist I am, as well as the outcome of my services because I truly want my clients to walk away with an experience they’ve never had before.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love the diversity and the number of opportunities that are here for those in the beauty industry. It’s such a blessing to be around so many different cultures and learn about them. It’s such a different dynamic from the south, so it’s refreshing to experience diversity like this, as well as raise my son here! The food is AMAZING! So many varieties!!!! I’m such a foodie, so I love how there is always a new place to try.

I also love how there is always something to do or a new place to explore! The city is so beautiful, and there is a lot to discover here! I think traffic and gas prices may be the only thing I dislike lol!
