Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Allen.
Hi Max, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a college golfer but lost my career to an injury outside of the game. When I returned, I wasn’t the same player. I felt healthy, my swing felt good, but it didn’t result in performance. The one season I competed was a total disaster by my standards. I had begun exploring biomechanics to evaluate my swing and prevent injury. But after the season I had, I committed to a total rebuild. I discarded everything I thought I knew and started from the ground up.
Long story short, I met with different professionals talking about the golf swing and reading literature from scientific and traditional perspectives. Through this process, I found there is ideal technique in this game. I applied what I was learning and regained my ability as a player.
As in any physical activity or sport, there are healthy, productive, efficient means of movement, and the golf swing is no exception. Conversely, there is incorrect technique which can lead to injury and poor performance. Conventional golf instruction has always taught there are a bunch of ways to swing the golf club and you have to find whatever works for you. That idealogy makes every opinion valid and grants license to any laymen to be a coach. With networks like social media or YouTube, incorrect information can be broadcast ad nauseam.
I have been a ‘lost’ golfer. I know the dissatisfaction of not playing this game at the level you know you’re capable of. I also see the coaching malpractice within the industry that leads golfers astray into bad form and even injury. I entered coaching because it is a supreme delight that I get to deliver golfers from that and equip them to reach and even exceed their goals.
Starting Swingworx was the only way to do this in its purest form. I coached in the NCAA, I coached for a prominent golf academy, experiences which I appreciate and were edifying. I tried to make those my forever jobs but it hindsight, they would have compromised the coaching.
When we did the first interview, I wasn’t even a year in. Now, I’m over 5 years in and I’ll conduct around 2000 sessions and work with about 300 different people per year. I’ve expanded my facility to include an indoor practice area with multiple TrackMan simulator bays.
The messaging has been the same since day one and continues to resonate with the golf community. What helps most now are the testimonials. People can read about the results in the words of clients and often find one or more they can relate to. It reveals my methodology is not just theoretical, but empirical – it yields real results.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m grateful and humbled on this topic because I think my struggles have been few and modest relative to what other small businesses go through. It’s not to say it has been easy. Starting this venture was borderline impossible but we covered that in the previous interview.
The most stressful part in the last few years was expanding. Increasing the scope of the operation and the size of the facility required constant planning and significant investment. There was the pressure of building the facility correctly with all its details, then it functioning correctly with all the different technologies involved, then making sure clients enjoyed it. All of this was weighing on me while still coaching my normal hours.
There were definitely problems in the building and functionality portions which chip away at you patience and confidence in the project. Fortunately, we worked through them and there is now an automated practice facility that clients are thoroughly enjoying. It was an exhausting amount of work but I’m grateful this struggle was to advance the business and not simply survive.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What stands out is that my coaching is based on biomechanics and data. I take a scientific approach to training people towards ideal form for bodily health and reaching golf goals.
What I’m most proud of is the success and enjoyment my clients experience in golf. I’ve worked with everyone from plus-handicaps to complete beginners.
I conduct free evaluations for new clients so we can assess their game and what it will take to improve. Additionally, they can learn about my methodology and ask questions before committing to working with me.
The newest development is that I have an automated indoor practice facility available daily. It has two TrackMan simulators offering up to 50 metrics with virtual ranges and nearly 500 virtual golf courses from Pebble Beach to St Andrew’s.
Any big plans?
The expansion for the practice facility was the last feature I had in the original business plan. I do have smaller projects I want to work on that will provide more resources for my clients.
