Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Baker.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Oh man, where to start… I guess I’ve always been an artist like literally born into it. I have a few other family members who are creative like me but never fully pursued it and I think myself and my sister were the first ones to really dive into head-on. Growing up, I’d always have a sketchbook with me or would always be mesmerized by a movie like anything by Disney or a Tim Burton film or something. Fast forward to college, I ended up getting involved with photography and being on film sets with the film kids and found a new passion for it. Now for over six years, it’s crazy to see where I’ve been able to grow and who I’ve been able to work with as a photographer. I know I still have a lot to learn and work on, but I can definitely say I’ve been very blessed with the opportunities that have popped up on this crazy journey of life. Sure, it’s taken blood, sweat, and tears to break through the mold but it’s been so, so worth it to pursue what I’m truly passionate about.
Please tell us about your art.
I do all sorts of things! But photography, like I mentioned, has been the thing I focus on the most. I do my own editing work too, I’m always working in Photoshop and Lightroom constantly learning and bettering my craft. Ever since I started this whole thing, I’ve come to realize how insane the industry is and to be quite frank, how sexist it is. I want to be able to prove to this industry that not just the men can do the work and be taken seriously; women can do whatever they can do and probably better. I want to hopefully inspire others to go for it, no matter how impossible it might seem. The way I see it, all I really want out of this is to be able to know I’m genuinely happy with where I’m at in life and when (or hopefully) I’m old and grey I can look back at everything I’ve done and have no regrets and be proud of what I was able to do. And I think everyone needs to do that in order to be content with life and not just go through the motions.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think being 1000% into what you’re doing, as in being so passionate about what you’re doing that nothing will stop you, is crucial to success. If you’re just doing it because you don’t know what else you want to do or it sounds fun, you’re already probably going to fail. It’s not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. Passion, persistence, and having courage is really important. I’ve been in situations where I thought I wasn’t good enough to land a certain gig or job, but believing in yourself and telling yourself you are so worth it can change everything. Self-worth is something we all struggle with and we as artists need to know we were worthy of opportunities and getting paid for our work. As long as we don’t compare ourselves to what everyone else is doing, I think we’ll be just fine in the long run.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can follow me on social media @maxbakerphoto and check out my website and blog at maxbakerofficial.com or maxbakerofficial.com/blog! And all the support I ask for is if anyone is interested in booking me for a shoot or just spreading the word about me would be incredible. I know that if I meet someone and they’re looking for a particular type of artist, like a producer or something, I’m always throwing friends’ names out to that person and show their social media pages to reach them at. It’s all about word of mouth and talking to people about other people if that makes sense! It’s crazy what can happen with something as easy as that.
