Today we’d like to introduce you to May Ziv.
May, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I may. female singer. Musician. Israeli. My art usually does not tell about the crises of the narrative. Only about the internal world of a person who has to discover himself within frameworks, laws, the spirit of the times and its limits, to balance the inner self and to understand what everyone wants from you. How do you do that? My music is not trying to correct the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, to connect the left and the right or between vegan and meat eaters. My music tries to describe an inner process of a person trying to understand himself within the turbulent world.
For 15 years I have performed in hotels as a singer, with other people’s songs. I tried to be who I wanted me to be, what goes on, what you get because that’s where the money is and it’s probably the glory. I really do have a nice voice, but I never thought it mattered because it’s like a pretty face, what about what’s inside? Intelligence makes you beautiful, not your face. The process was long until I realized that I was who I was for being who I am and no one is teaching us to listen to it, to love it or even to know it.
Since we are small we are educated into culture, values, spirit of the times, morality, laws. It’s hard to know who you are. Except for the robot. I got into myself and left jobs with a lot of money, fame with lots of licking, I left what would make my family proud and started to say what I think. It started with the songs, with the alternative, protesting music that goes against the “stream.” So I became an alternative indie artist in Israel, in the Middle East, where no one listens to this music and certainly not to the protests.
From here I aspire to go out into the world with my message that will strengthen people to look inside and connect themselves in the middle of hell to be egoists who do not care about anyone and find authenticity. My dream is that my music will reach Europe and places where you are more open to listening and loving such layers
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To live in Israel and make music in English.
Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
A musical against the tide.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Self Realization.
