Meet Mayra Duran and Alejandro Lopez Jr. of A & M Luxury Events in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Duran and Alejandro Lopez Jr.

Mayra and Alejandro, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our business idea started from the gender reveal that we had -which we’d later find out it was a baby girl, in my parent’s backyard in May 2018. After many friends and family members complimented us on how beautiful the setup and decor were, naturally we looked at each other and said, “this is something we could do.” We had unknowingly created our first event. That idea stuck in our head and we didn’t really act on it until after our baby girl was born in September 2018.

In February of 2019, while we both sat in our bedroom, the real business planning began. We started to play with the idea of having a website and having a business name. Initially, we were supposed to be San Diego Party Rentals, but we weren’t satisfied with that, it didn’t feel personal to us. And so, I like to give my husband full credit for who we are known for today, and that’s A & M Luxury Events.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business and having a newborn is not easy. We’ve had to learn how to change diapers and make bottles while simultaneously learning how to keep track of inventory, quoting new clients per event, and learning how to prepare for multiple events in one day. In addition, the space that tablecloths, chairs, and tables take-up was a huge factor in this industry that we didn’t think of beforehand. We had to purchase a trailer to store our equipment but also find a way to use it when transporting for events.

It’s been a challenge, to say the least, but we’ve steadily managed our business and have successfully assisted in 55+ events/orders this year.

Please tell us about A & M Luxury Events.
A & M Luxury Events offers several services related to event planning and event decor. We provide backdrops, event rentals, customized floral arches, champagne wall, offer wedding planning and a day of coordinator, floral centerpieces, balloon garlands, and we specialize in creating the most beautiful grazing/cheese tables for any event.

As a company, we are most proud of our family support. Our families are always willing to help our business in whatever way possible. We even inspired my husband’s mother to start her own business, NL Flower Boutique.

We’re also especially proud of working with our customers and helping them bring their ideas to life.
We strongly believe that our unique style, attention to detail, and customer services sets us apart from others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Our favorite childhood memory is how we met. We met at Mendoza Elementary in Mr. Barnum’s 5th-grade class. Back then, when home phones still existed, he called my home one afternoon and asked me to be his girlfriend. Things got complicated after a week and I broke up with him. I think you could say we were meant to be!
