Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Massad.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young child, I was always in the kitchen with my mom and grandmas. My grandma Gwen loved desserts, so during the holidays, we would make all kinds of cookies and sweets for the family. I feel like my love for my family would be shown thru the desserts that I would make. In my twenties, I enrolled at the Art Institute of Houston and got my degree in Culinary Arts. I excelled in Art Culinaire, where we followed a top chef and recreated their dishes into our own masterpiece. Even though I loved baking and desserts as a kid, I failed pastry class… twice!!! After graduating, I got the opportunity to work many different positions in wine bars, restaurants, cafes and was a sales rep for a gourmet food distributor. I became a full-time mom at 30 and now have a five-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son. I love being a stay at home mom, but I missed getting to use my culinary creativity. I kept watching really cool cake and cookie decorating videos on IG and was like I’m going to try that out. I started making cookies for fun to give to family, friends, teachers, local business, the garbage man… lol, anyone who looked like they needed a cookie. Someone suggested I sell them, so here I am!! It’s my passion to create such beautiful and tasty cookies, and I love seeing my customers smile when they receive their order.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a pretty smooth road and I can’t complain. The main struggle that I have had to deal with is having to turn down orders. It’s a one-woman show over here, so I am limited on time and kitchen space during peak holiday seasons. Luckily, I’ve gotten pretty good a time management, and hopefully, one day I’ll have a commercial kitchen and staff to help out.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sugared and Iced story. Tell us more about the business.
I create decorated sugar cookies with royal icing. It’s customized to the event (birthdays, baby showers, holidays, company logo, etc). What sets my cookies apart from others is the cookie itself is almost like an almond shortbread. It has a very moist and delicate flavor that’s not overly sweet. I am most proud that business keeps growing and I am constantly getting repeat and new business.
