Meet Megan Siason of m studio interior design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Siason.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The creation of m studio interior design kind of just happened… it was a beautiful thing really and I had a great colleague who gave me the push I needed to get started. I had been working in the industry of residential interiors since 2009 at various showrooms selling designer furniture, fabrics, flooring, window coverings and also worked for a few small design firms. After receiving degrees from San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, I joined the design team for a local Design/ Build firm that helped me understand the world of construction and kitchen and bath design.

During my entire experience working in residential interiors, I learned that the collaboration with homeowners and their appreciation for their uniquely transformed spaces that I had the privilege to be a part of was beyond rewarding. I wanted to do more. And though I struggled with much hesitation and self-doubt, I had been told that there never is a “right time” for anything in life… you just have to go for it. So with that mindset and of course the encouragement from various colleagues, I decided to pursue an interior design business on my own.

Where am I at now? Well, still very much a small business and figuring things out. But I am excited and humbled to share that in the first few years my design work was published several times in local design magazines featured as “Kitchens of the Year” and in 2016 won my first Design Excellence award, 1st for kitchen design. I recently brought on a design assistant and am hopeful to create a wonderful team of designers in the near future. Moving forward in 2018, officially year numero 3 in business, hoping to kick some serious design butt!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth road? Not at all. There were many obstacles and challenges that I faced, but one of the biggest challenges for myself that I admit I will likely always face includes getting over that self-doubt, that inner bitch that instills so much fear of failure. My mini mantras, motivational quotes and listening to uplifting podcasts and audible books help to quickly get me over that hurdle.

The other challenge that I faced, which I’m glad to report has slowly improved, is finding that work/ life balance. How can I take care of business and all that it encompasses while still having an actual life!? I’m in my early thirties and don’t want to miss out on the wonderful experiences and memorable occasions that come about with my family and friends!

This has to be a common struggle for new business owners. My first step in addressing this was to get the office out of my home! I was fortunate enough to check that off my list within my first year. Still, I am always looking for ways to maintain a healthy balance by establishing work boundaries and introducing activities that promote a more healthy lifestyle, physically and mentally, into my daily routine.
