Meet Meghan Amon of Sage and Sea Photography in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Amon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Photography started as a hobby for me. I loved my job but I am a very creative person and I felt like I wasn’t fulfilling that side of myself. I always loved taking pictures of my husband, my pets and my friends. I started doing little photoshoots for my friends on special occasions and started to realize how much I actually loved photographing people and giving them the photos knowing they would always have them to remember special moments in their lives. One day, it just hit me, “If I love doing this so much, why don’t I start doing it professionally?” I started learning as much as I could in my spare time, investing in equipment and designing a brand and a website. My clients have slowly grown from friends and family, to friends of friends, and beyond. And while I still have a long way to go I’m so excited to see what the future has in store for Sage and Sea Photography.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The hardest part for me was starting in the first place. For the longest time after realizing this was something I wanted, I would make excuses for why it wouldn’t work. I had so many fears- fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of putting something I created out into the world where it could be judged. I would look at the entirety of what I needed to do like this giant mountain that seemed insurmountable. But when I took the smallest first step in the right direction and completed that first task, it gave me motivation and confidence to continue onto the next small step. These small beginning steps turned into bigger steps and I realized that even if I did ultimately fail, that would be much better than never putting myself out there and trying at all.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sage and Sea Photography – what should we know?
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I specialize in couples and family photography but I also love doing shoots for maternity, newborn and pets. I would say what sets me apart is that I want people to have an experience that is true to them and their personalities. I like to get to know people a little bit ahead of time to make sure they are getting the setting and tone of the photoshoot that fits them. If a couple is passionate about the beach and that’s where they spend so much of their time, then a beach photoshoot would be really special for them. On the other hand, if there’s a couple who is much more urban and not really into the outdoors, I would want to set up a shoot maybe walking around town or going into a local brewery. Some people are very playful and want fun candid shots, while others want a more formal family portrait to hang on the wall. My life’s mantra is “Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.” I want the photos I take to reflect the little things that were the most important to my clients at that moment.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, my husband has been my biggest supporter. He has encouraged me every step of the way and has allowed me to take endless photos of him. Then my parents and my sister have all been so amazing. From helping me with investing in equipment to giving me pep talks when I felt like I hit a roadblock. I have also had so much support from my friends, a handful of whom would model for me whenever I needed practice in a new location, or needed more content to promote myself. I also had several friends and early clients who were so great about promoting me to their networks; from writing reviews to telling their friends about me for their family photos, or their friends who just got engaged about an engagement shoot. Two photographer friends of mine, Krista Willis and Diana Lake (they are both amazing photographers-check them out!) have been extremely professionally inspiring and helpful in my journey. Diana gave me the most amazing advice initially on starting my own photography business and Krista has referred me to clients several times and was even my referral for this article feature. I would be nowhere near where I am today without these people and I am so grateful to have them all in my life and on this crazy journey with me.

    Will that be a possibility
