Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa “Missy” Babineau.
Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In August of 2014, I had three children. I was working full time in retail management, going through a divorce, I barely ever slept, I barely ever saw my babies. I would take as many pictures of them as I could because I desperately wanted to preserve those little faces for as long as possible. Then, my childcare provider quit in the middle of the night. I am a firm believer in everything happens for a reason, so, I decided to quit my job and pursue photography.
To raise my babies, still, provide for them and create beautiful memories for others along the way. It was scary at first, but so empowering! Over the last few years, I have steadily built a wonderful clientele, a solid business and thousands of memories forever frozen in time. From legacy portraits, family and weddings to commercial headshots and product photography, I love it all!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started, I didn’t know anything about actually running a business aside from my managerial role in retail. I learned a lot along the way. It’s been a steady build of growth and learning along with perfecting my style, my brand and creating a bond with my clients. I am also very blessed to have a solid support system in my wonderful husband, Tim, and my mom, Marilyn, who is my biggest cheerleader.
Please tell us about Capture Awe Imagery.
Capture Awe Imagery is more than just a photoshoot. I take pride in having a three-four step in-person experience. I do not expect anyone to be comfortable with a complete stranger, and if you’re uncomfortable, you look it in your photos too! We have a consultation first. Either in person or over the phone. Then we have our shoot date. I am a lifestyle photographer so I give prompts to capture those real moments. Genuine laughter, giggles, sheer joy and pure happiness are my goals.
A week later, we have the image reveal appointment. It’s a slideshow and we order prints and products at that time. The last meeting is the delivery of said prints and products. I pride myself on providing heirloom quality artwork. Meaning, it will outlast your lifetime! Not only do I have these steps, I also grow with families. Their children know me and so they’re comfortable in front of my lens. Which makes for natural, beautiful images.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh boy… probably watching my parents get married. At the time, I felt bored out of my mind because I didn’t understand what was going on. I laid on the floor, wouldn’t stop talking to my sister, my brother was all over the place… But now, I remember the joy on my mom’s face. I remember my dad holding her hands and the silk flower bouquet the officiant handed to my mom so she could have the full experience.
I remember all of her preparations leading up to that moment. With her four children around her acting crazy, she happily married the man of her dreams. This memory and my parents’ 28 years together are why I tell my wedding clients, “now remember, it’s not actually about the wedding itself. It’s about your marriage.” This memory reminds me to celebrate love no matter the chaos around you!
