Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Martinez.
Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was first brought around custom doors as a young kid on vacation from school going to work with my dad. I was too young to use power tools and my job was to help keep the job site clean, help set up and put things away, keep the truck organized, that sort of thing. Once I graduated from high school, I went straight to work with my dad, learning every facet of custom entry doors from the bottom up. Over the last 18 years since I started, it has been a journey of nonstop learning and hard work. Over these last 18 years, I have heard too much feedback from customers to ignore the fact that there was a serious need for us to be available directly to the homeowner, and this feedback led to the birth of Custom Door Boutique about 2 years ago. Our simple approach has been extremely well received and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the customers in San Diego who have given us the opportunity to upgrade their entry doors over the past two years in particular. Without them there is no Custom Door Boutique, so thank you all so much!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I suppose my biggest obstacle was myself. I have always enjoyed this work, but I was not completely convinced in my early years that custom doors was what I was going to pursue. This niche trade in itself is very demanding with long hours, and it requires dedicated concentration to avoid very costly mistakes, but this is true with any craft. Much like how it took me many years to master this craft, it took at least that many years for me to mature enough to put all the pieces together to be able to form Custom Door Boutique and have it hit the ground running. I had the best teacher I could possibly have with my dad and there would certainly have been many more struggles for me if it hadn’t been for him.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Custom Door Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
Custom Door Boutique is a family owned business that specializes in custom entry and interior doors, hardware and installations. Based on our experience and customer feedback, we are becoming more and more known for the quality of our products and installations, and our service. That was the goal when starting the company. Our whole purpose is to help homeowners painlessly upgrade their entry doors with the product that best suits them and their tastes. We handle everything from initial design consultation to the installation of the final product and our customers love that about us. We are a one stop shop.
What I am most proud of as a company is that our customers have done a lot of the advertising for us. No company is perfect of course, but our customers have helped spread the word about us and there is no amount of advertising prowess from bigger shops that can beat true organic growth from happy customers. I believe this is a key element that sets us apart from many others competing in this niche.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure… On one hand I don’t believe in luck, I believe in hard work and dedication and making things happen but on the other, I was definitely very lucky to have a great teacher in my dad, and to have met many people along the way that shaped who I am today and where our business is today. I am very lucky to have my health and the ability to work, which is so easy to take for granted.
