Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Hall.
Hi Michele, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My first career, from June 1972 through January 1991, was working as a registered nurse where I held a few positions including working in the operating room, pediatric intensive care unit, on an in-hospital research unit, and being responsible for coordinating a newborn screening program for San Diego and Imperial counties in southern California.
I retired from nursing in 1991 and joined my husband in our family business (Howard Hall Productions), utilizing the skills I’d learned as a nurse and during my vacations spent traveling with and supporting film crews making marine-related wildlife documentary films. My role as a documentary film producer continues. During this time I have focused my efforts on producing marine-related wildlife films for television and theatrical release, and I’m now perhaps best known for my underwater IMAX films. Many of my films have been recognized with awards at wildlife film festivals. It’s important to me to make family-friendly films that raise awareness of and increase appreciation for the marine environment. I’ve been told more than once over the years that my films have inspired people to turn their career choices toward marine sciences and / or environmental issues. I also enjoy taking underwater still photos of the marine environment, marine animals (especially depicting animal behavior), and behind-the-scenes stills and video of our film productions.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
They say you’re only as good as your last film. Fortunately, I’ve yet to produce a real stinker. To date our films have been received well by audiences and have been profitable for our Executive Producers, so I’ve not had trouble getting more contracts.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce marine wildlife documentaries for our production company, Howard Hall Productions. We make family-friendly films for broadcast, streaming venues and IMAX theatrical release. Once we make a commitment to a project, we pride ourselves in delivering on-time and on-budget. I’m very proud of the fact that after being in this business for over three and a half decades, the films I produce are still recognized as being valuable, and are still winning awards.
I’ve also managed our stock footage library where we licensed footage that Howard had captured (underwater, aerials, time lapse and night sky) to other productions. We recently turned over the management of that library to one of our agents.
