Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickelle McCrory.
Mickelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started like a lot of moms who want to take good pictures of their kids. The first time I offered to take photos of a friend and her daughter, I KNEW I had found my passion. It lit my soul on fire to have a creative outlet and create something beautiful and meaningful for someone else. I started with many free shoots and continued to practice and invest in more education. I can look at my work from when I started three years ago and I see how far I’ve come. I am now starting to branch out into doing commercial shoots, as well as family and portraits.
Has it been a smooth road?
Never a smooth road! My daughter was two when I decided to get serious about photography. Finding the time to set aside for myself to do something that wasn’t initially earning money was difficult. I was later paying for babysitters to do shoots that were barely covering my expenses. There is a lot of upfront investment in photography and it was sometimes hard to justify the money and time it took when I hadn’t broken even yet. Another challenge was moving from Japan to San Diego right before I had my second baby. I had to start all over building up clients and trying to market myself.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a natural light photographer that specializes in family photography. My favorite images to capture are of motherhood. I aim to take images that are more than what is purely seen but also capture what the moment feels like. I can’t decide if my favorite part of my job is taking and editing the pictures or meeting and connecting with the wonderful humans I get to photograph. I love meeting new people and making people feel beautiful!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the beach, the food, and the people. However I live coastally and feel it could be ten degrees warmer almost all the time haha.
