Meet Mike Mejia of SD Fitness Academy in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Mejia.

Mike, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always doing some type of physical activity, from running around the neighborhoods with friends, skateboarding, or playing basketball. It was not until high school, where a few of my friends and I enrolled in the weightlifting class to replace P.E. was when I got first introduced to the gym. After one semester of the class, I was hooked. My passion for the lifestyle grew from there. I remember doing research online on forums and going to Barnes and Nobles scanning through magazines and books on how to build muscle, increase your lifts, and preventing injuries. The thought of doing this as a career never came to mind until my friend Neil sparked the light bulb one day during training, and from there I went and got certified and pursued a degree in Kinesiology.

In 2018, I graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelors in Kinesiology with an emphasis as a fitness specialist. During my time in school, I was also working as a personal trainer at the local 24-hour fitness for about three years. Having the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people and being able to implement what I was learning simultaneously helped me grow as a coach.

I loved the people Ive met, helped, and built relationships with at the corporate setting, but I knew I wanted to do more. It was a dream of mine to run my own personal training business and be my own boss, but I just wasn’t sure how or when it was going to happen. It wasn’t until a couple of months after graduating was when I came across Self Made Training Facility Mission Valley. From there, I took the leap and went independent as a trainer working for myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’d be lying if I said its been a smooth road. It’s definitely a rollercoaster ride when it comes to running your own business. Servicing clients is only a small part of the equation. Creating content, scheduling clients, marketing, networking, continued education, tracking expenses, and taxes are just some of the many behind the scenes things that make it challenging. It’s a whole different ball game from what you learn in school for sure.

Aside from that, there were times I doubted myself or was unsure of what I was doing, and if this was truly worth it. But it’s all a process and by focusing on getting better every day and remembering the reason WHY I started this in the first place, makes it all worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with SD Fitness Academy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’ve started SD Fitness Academy as a personal training business focused on helping busy men and women build the best versions of themselves by simplifying their fitness and nutrition.

I achieve this by:
-Educating about proper daily movement and sustainable nutrition habits.
-Helping empower individuals to realize their true potential.
-Building the best version of themselves, one day at a time.

I meet each individual where they’re currently at and then we map out a plan together of where they want to see themselves in the next six months for example. Then I create a customized program catered to each individual that will help guide them to their goal in a sustainable, results-driven fashion.

Helping clients reach their goals and hit new individual stats is one thing. But the best feeling is when you leave a positive impact on an individuals life that goes way beyond stats in the gym. Such as completely removing pain without the use of medicine anymore or building the confidence and strength to learn how to ride a bike. These are the types of impact that make me proud and continue to motivate me to do my best.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The amazing weather year round and the endless amount of food options and the craft beer scene are the best things I love about San Diego. I dislike the increase in the cost of living out here haha.
