Meet Mikhayela Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikhayela Curry.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Moldova, and when I was seven years old, I moved to America with my parents and my two older brothers. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to do hair. It was a huge passion of mine, so I decided to finish high school as fast as I could and go straight to beauty school at 17 years old. I got a job at a great salon in the Seattle area, and when I was 21, my husband and I decided it was best for us to move to Los Angeles. I got a job with a top colorist in L.A. But, after a few years I decided to take a really big risk in my career and start my own studio.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a hair colorist. My “why” has always been very strong when it comes to my career. Which is, I want to make women feel like their value is so much higher than they have ever imagined. I wanted to use hair as a tool to make women feel beautiful in every way. I was very intentional about the environment that I wanted to create at my salon. I wanted women to walk in and feel peace. I wanted women to feel like they were good enough, and like they didn’t have to compare themselves to 20 other women that were getting their hair done at the same time. I wanted them to feel privacy, so they could say whatever they wanted, and they didn’t have someone listening in or judging them.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
To me, success is waking up in the morning and feeling purpose. Feeling excited to go to work. Being energized by what you do not being burdened by it. Being an artist is always such a funny thing. You have this side of you that hates rules and wants to rebel to everything the world says is right, but then there’s this other part of you that needs to take care of things so that you remain in a position to create art. And thats a very hard balance to find. I think the key to success is never being above any job. Not saying no when you’re still in a position of “trying to make it.” Putting your pride aside to helping someone else reach success even if you feel like you haven’t yet.
