Meet Misun Holdorf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misun Holdorf.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My only dream, since childhood, was to become an artist. I’m not sure where this idea came from. All I remember is that I was always drawing. It was something I just had to do. Even my classmates understood this and when I was caught drawing and sketching in class instead of paying attention, they would defend me to the teacher telling her, “Misun just has to draw!”

I grew up in South Korea in a large city, but moved with my family to the tropical island of Guam when I was 16. The colors of the beach, the ocean waves, the flowers and the wildlife inspired me. I wanted to put it all on canvas.

I became a flight attendant to see the world. Seeing so much beauty all around me further inspired me. In 2011, I opened my first tube of oil paint and could put all these vibrant colors to my memories.

Shortly thereafter I joined an art group. We met weekly and discussed our work. This experience increased my confidence and soon I was applying to galleries and held my first solo art show.

After moving to San Diego in 2014 I continued my artistic endeavors by joining galleries and becoming a member of Spanish Village Art Centern Balboa Park. I have since become represented by the prestigious Adelman Fine Art gallery. You can find my work there today.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a professional palette knife painter. I started my oil painting with brushes with traditional manner. But I fell in love with palette knife more quickly. The pure and vibrant color I could get and sculptural texture I could build let me create more expressive work.

Through experience of my travels, I wanted to transport the viewer. I feel the impasto technique lends itself to create a touchable landscape.

I wish the viewer to place themselves in my work to gain sense of peace and happiness.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think it’s very important to establish your own artistic voice. Constantly experiment with your own creativity to let your style reveal itself.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am represented by Adelman Fine Art gallery in Little Italy and also you can view my work on my website.
