Meet Mo Maciejewski of Evsecco in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mo Maciejewski.

Mo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Absolutely! Here’s the story… I once read a quote by EB White, the author of the classic children’s story, Charlotte’s Web. White said, “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” Having read those words, I felt, for possibly the first time in my life, defined.

For as long as I can remember, I have been conscious of moral responsibility to put more positive energy into the world than I consume. Almost like, if there is not enough to go around, someone else should get “it,” because I will somehow be okay. So at my very core, I have this existential anxiety. And for me, when I am exercising, I am less anxious. I feel empowered, independent, connected, and grateful all at once. I become myself. I thought, “okay, if I can share this feeling with others, I am increasing the amount of positive energy circulating in the world, and there is even enough for me to enjoy it too.”

Here’s the catch. I can’t teach people to feel more like themselves. I can teach people to exercise. The silver lining is that often, the latter leads to the former. So I built a life that allowed me to teach exercise to thousands and thousands of people.

In search of a more stable state of mind, I began to research coping practices for stress and finally understood that I’ve always had stress reactions (cue waking up with racing thoughts at 3 in the morning), I just thought this is how everyone lived and never talked about it. Newsflash, it’s not!

However, I also learned that what I feel is normal. I’m in 18.1% of people that live with anxiety every day. That means, of the people I have taught, many are just like me. This has heightened my ability to create workouts that soothe and target stress management through exercise. It has allowed me to make every second that I put into teaching be a second spent in a better state of mind. Not just for me, but for everyone. My goal is to spread positivity in this world, every second count. Evsecco is a portmanteau for this mantra. Ev(very) Sec(ond) Co(unts). Evsecco.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth, no. Worth every bump? You betcha. First and foremost, I had to find a way to “sell a product” that, in my mind, is a bare necessity – contentment. I put ‘sell a product’ in quotation marks because I will be the first one to tell you that you do not need to buy a thing from anyone to be more YOU. You’ve got all the magic you need right inside.

What I can do is hold the space and give you the grace to realize that you have always been the key to unlocking your most authentic, blissed-out, happy just-to-be-alive self! Let that sink in! Other than that, I am navigating the tech world one day at a time. I’m inspired and overwhelmed by what goes into something as “simple” as an Instagram post, but you know, it has been cool to learn a new skill. I carry an ethernet cable with me wherever I travel now, it’s a good look. 😉

Evsecco – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My favorite question. We do holistic fitness! We teach students that you can tap into your mental and emotional strength through physical activity. Our physical activity of choice? Live, virtual fitness classes. That’s what we specialize in. They are on Zoom and about 45 minutes each, so it’s easy to join from anywhere. I host 1-2 of them every day. It’s like having a mood boost on speed dial. It is important to me that we are known as the best decision you’ve made all day. When you take a class with Evsecco, it’s physical work, mental focus, and emotional release. We want that bliss to radiate through you all day long, so it’s gotta be the best experience, every single time.

Hands down, I am most proud of creating the FIRST fitness space that is 0% focused on creating physical changes. Before you say anything, I know that seems counterintuitive! And it’s definitely what sets us apart. Here’s how I look at it – a kid running around with a beet-red face and a huge grin on their face is not chasing a number on a scale – they are chasing the pure radical sensation of being alive. This is a natural state for us, as humans. Our job is to remind you how to get back to that sensation.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I am beaming over the future of the health and wellness industry! Right now, we are at the cusp of a total energetic shift in the way people look at fitness. There is more money being put into the scientific research behind the correlation of stress and chronic illness and the countless ability of physical activity to reduce these symptoms.

The conversation around mental health has already begun. Instead of parents using the emotional bandaid of “You’re okay,” they are asking their children, “What happened? How do you feel right now?”. Teachers are checking in with students that seem to have one too many ‘bad days.’ As for the rest of us? Memes and Twitter threads remind us that “adulting” is more of the exception than the rule, and it’s okay to not be okay. Once we have the vocabulary to describe how stress feels and identify where it shows up in your physical health, mindset, and daily life, we have the power to dissolve any energy that is not serving us. This is where the magic happens.

When we reconnect in ten years, I want us to celebrate how far healthcare has come in including mental health resources and preventative programs, I want us to celebrate how many companies have created products and services that teach individuals to be more like themselves, not less, and I want us to celebrate that the new normal is to feel confident, strong, thankful, content, positive, happy, and understood. Let’s celebrate, making every second count.
