Today we’d like to introduce you to Avant Tropic by Mozar Rovere.
Hi Mozar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I remember it almost felt like a tradition, from a young age as a child, to go with my dad to our local Farmers’ Market on Saturdays and once we were done with the produce we would stop at the flower stand to get carnations for my mom. We chose the colors together which was always a fun and exciting moment for me. My family always had flowers and many plants in our home, even though we lived in an apartment, there was a lot of green and life around us. I was a kid very connected to nature in general, loved everything animals, plants, crystals and minerals, climbing trees, trapping bugs in terrariums and getting my hands in the dirt. Our vacations were never too far but always surrounded by ocean views and waterfalls. I’m originally from Brazil but first got captivated by floral design when i lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, back in 2011. At the time I was working at a restaurant that had beautiful arrangements by the bar. I was always fascinated by the botanicals and the ways they were used since arrangements back home in Brazil were still, for the most part, very symmetrical and traditional. These ones had not only exotic flowers but also fascinating branches and foliages, structure and movement. They’d completely change the environment once the florist, a petit Japanese girl, got there in the morning loaded with botanicals to set them up. From that moment on I always got absorbed by the art of floral design and started to admire other florist’s works and techniques. But it was just further down the line in 2019, when I was already living in San Diego, that I came back from a regular Trader Joe’s trip with a few peonies in the bag and decided to arrange them in a different way than just putting them in a vase. A couple weeks later I ordered a kenzan from Amazon (aka pin frog), a heavy weighted metal plate with pointy pins used in Japanese ikebana style florals as a way to hold the stems up. That, with a few higher grade stems from a local floral shop, changed the way I saw the art. I made a simple, small ‘ikebana-like’ arrangement and posted a picture on my personal account on Instagram. I got a couple words of encouragement on social media and from that moment on I didn’t stop creating. The motivation got me committed to explore with one arrangement a week to build myself a portfolio and learn more about the flowers studying on my own, mostly watching videos online and experiencing with them hands on. Flowers were the escape I needed at a time I was in an astrological hell, when i found myself depressed out of a relationship, with health issues and unhappy at work. Going to the flowers’ market early in the mornings, the search, the processing, the arranging part and documenting their unique beauty in pictures, everything mesmerized me and brought me joy. I made that process my therapy to bring me out of my dark moments. Soon enough I was being asked by friends to make commissioned arrangements for special occasions like birthdays, baby showers, Valentine’s and so on. Today I really find my joy back in the roots that brought my attention to this fascinating world: creating floral arrangements and botanical landscapes for retail places like bars, restaurants, clubs, boutiques and shops. Latest projects include studying and applying photographic and digital skills to my work hoping to soon have textiles and prints available and also elaborate creative marketing content for other brands’ campaigns.
Avant Tropic became the face of this project, where I use my creativity and botanicals as the medium to create uniquely crafted botanical landscapes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Avant Tropic was founded in October 2019, right before Covid19 hit so I definitely had to slow down my expectations with regards to growing the business. So far I have only been taking projects that I can manage on my own, considering I have a full time job on top of it. This all can be very challenging but has also allowed me to have full control of the creative process itself and helped me finding my own identity as a floral artist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Avant Tropic [A|T] is a creative floral design studio based in California, founded by Brazilian botanical artist Mozar Rovere from his desire to bring eye-catching pieces and landscapes uniquely designed to order.
Evoking poetic feelings through the use of color, shape, movement and texture, our botanicals show their power in an atmosphere of sensations with elements of art, culture, architecture, design and fashion as inspiration.
We proudly present for top quality blooms and tropicals, hand picked early in the flower market, often with foraged, dried, preserved and artistically manipulated bits. Our creations are armed with exotic elements to swiftly transport the admirer to their own lost paradise — a pause for the busy mind.
Besides bouquets, arrangements, installations, photographic and digital work, [A|T] also aims to collaborate with others in the creative field such as fellow artists and florists, art directors, interior and fashion designers, photographers, musicians and film makers.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
