Today we’d like to introduce you to Murphi Kennedy.
Murphi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all began during the Summer of 2008. After being released by the baseball organization I was with, I decided to pursue a new life in San Diego and explore some of my other passions. Namely music & acting. It started with me DJing children’s birthday parties and taking extra roles in short films to make ends meet. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs the desire to start something that I could call my own burned deep inside me. After moderate success but eventual failure running a carpet cleaning business and eventually a moving company, I decided to go all-in on my passion: Nightclub DJing. After countless hours of practice, classes and countless gigs performing in the living rooms and back yards in San Diego’s elite Fairbanks Ranch community. I decided to take my act downtown and entered the Red Bull DJ competition held at Stingaree Nightclub. After eight weeks of competition. I have crowned the champion and received my first residency there at Sting. The momentum started from there and had carried me to this day now having DJ’d every major nightclub in San Diego with occasional performances in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Hawaii, Amsterdam & Ensenada, Mexico.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to achieving your ultimate goals is never without incident, challenge or some other unfavorable situation. With becoming the “life of the party” you sacrifice a lot of the other parts of your lifestyle. Namely, sleep, weekend family time and your ability to maintain healthy relationships. You also struggle with depression, anxiety, loneliness, and a host of other psychological conditions that we all face in our everyday lives.
Please tell us about your business.
I’m an open format DJ meaning I play and blend different styles of music depending on the crowd, venue and mood. I play a lot at home and also travel nationally and internationally for gigs. I specialize in giving the room I’m in life! Transferring the fun energy within me out onto my crowds so that they can take a break from life and just enjoy themselves for a few hours. I’m most known for playing high energy sets that cross genres. My mic skills complement the music that’s playing so that’s another signature trait. I’m most proud of my ability to adapt and learn. Music is like fashion. Meaning trends come and go. What was cool yesterday may not be as hot today so you always have to be looking out and staying up to date on the latest trends. That’s how DJ’s avoid getting stale. I also pride myself on learning from others that have been doing this longer than me. There is always a new trick or technique to learn and add to your tool belt.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being outgoing and personable, on time and respectful/humble have been some of the most important to my success. This goes a long way in building long lasting relationships with people that help you/book you because they want to and not just because you ask.
