Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Plank.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
An early memory of my childhood was discovering drawing and the determination and excitement of using a pencil or crayon to make what pleases me. My grandfather and uncle as artists, beautiful drawings and oil paintings, were very inspiring, too. As a little girl, I could ask my grandfather to draw anything, and he would sweetly draw it for my sisters and me. I loved it! It makes me smile to remember the wonderful hours I spent with my best friend, Tory, drawing the silly to the sublime. As an adult, I attended and took classes at art schools in Chicago, New York, and San Diego, and many art classes and workshops with different artist/teachers. All of this was informative, continues to be so, but I think my earliest memories of the fun and the pride of the result is at the core of this passion and keeps me open to inspiration.
Please tell us about your art.
I am an oil painter, and I paint portraits, flowers, landscapes, seascapes, still life, animals, and anything I find inspiring to paint. There is a philosophy that a work of art should speak for itself, rather than needing an explanation or be open to broad interpretation. Other artists who work this way, I can appreciate and enjoy, but I don’t. My work is realistic, and what sets it apart is its heart. I can feel the pulse of it. In everything I paint, I am inspired and seek what is beautiful, strong, and giving. This is what I settle into when I paint, and how I know my painting is working when I see it in my work. My work powerfully conveys there is beauty and good in the world.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge for an artist is getting work out where it can be seen by those interested in the style and content of the artist’s work. Creating this space for artists is an incredible gift and kindness to artists. Thank you!
