Today we’d like to introduce you to Nasser Pirasteh.
Nasser, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Mashhad, Iran. I knew from the time I was six years old wanted to be a sculptor, received my first training from my father Abish Pirasteh. I received my master os arts in sculpture from St. Cloud State University, MN.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I moved to the United States in 1970, so I could have the right to speak and express myself freely.
No, we had a battle with the City of San Diego for installation art placed in my yard in 2016.
Please tell us more about your art.
I committed to the development of public art, for enriching people’s lives. My belief art breaks down barriers between beings and promotes an understanding of the universe itself. My creation goes beyond beautiful on the surface, they have to be deeply symbolic and something powerful.
I believe that it is my responsibility to take a message or a question, put it into physical form. Somehow I am a part of the process and my viewers part of it. This was it ends up a triangle between me, the project, and the viewer. The result is the finished product and I don’t have to be present when you look at my piece. My piece can open up a window or new form of life for the others to look through.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
