Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Mowat
Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi there! I’m Nicole Mowat, owner and founder of Breezy Bookkeeping. With a background in marketing and a graduate degree in sport management, I’ve worked in varying facets of the business world since 2008. Up until 2020, I worked in event management for about 8 years until I went all-in on my most important full time job to date: motherhood. I have three blonde babes with a 4-year spread between and they have been my wildest adventure. My husband is a Fire Captain for CalFire, and we are a proud fire family, living that crazy family circus life!
I am a strong believer in pursuing your passions, and finding that place where your skill set intersects with your inner spark. My journey has been an organic series of twists and turns, ultimately preparing and leading me to start a business of my own. Through an act of faith followed by fierce determination, Breezy Bookkeeping was born in 2022.
As a proud North County Coastal San Diegan – not quite born, but raised since the age of 6 – I absolutely love supporting all things local. The ubiquitous fervor, grit and creative sparkle that radiates from the small business culture is energizing and admirable.
I’m so proud to support our local small businesses and truly honored to work with my clients and be there for them throughout their business journey. It’s a great feeling to take what may feel like a burden off their plate, and allow them more time and energy to fuel the most important part of their business: their passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With each passing day of owning a business along with the more people I talk with and the more podcasts I listen to, there is one screaming truth as an entrepreneur that IYKYK – owning your own business is HARD! Layer on the personality trait of being an introvert and you’re likely to question your life decisions on the daily. As someone who feeds off the energy of other people, never did I ever imagine that I would find myself pursuing a career where I’m essentially working on an island. IT’S ALL. ON. ME.
Here’s what else I’ve learned: I don’t have to do it alone. There is an incredible community of entrepreneurs, specifically in the bookkeeping space, that I can lean on and learn from. There are local bookkeepers and CPAs I have met that have been so crucial in helping me grow, whether referring clients or acting as a sounding board. Yes, my business’s success does depend on me alone but I have people and resources standing behind me as backup, much like I stand beside my own clients.
I have 2 notes that hang above my desk. One is a sticky note that simply states “Do it nervous! Keep moving forward”. It’s my reminder to suck it up, take a deep breath, do what needs to get done, and do it well. The second is a note from my grandfather when I started Breezy Bookkeeping, that reads “It won’t be an easy journey, but it can be most fulfilling and a happy experience if you learn from it, and enjoy it.” Although I’m an introvert, my competitive nature tends to steer me down paths that are often not the easy choice. From coaching my daughter’s soccer team to running ultra marathons to having my own business. But I keep saying “yes” and force myself to do it nervous, proving my grandpa’s words to be true that it’s not always easy, but truly the most fulfilling way to live life.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Breezy Bookkeeping helps small business owners get their finances organized, remain current and gain clear and accurate insight into the financial health of their business. I offer virtual services, saving business owners money by outsourcing their bookkeeping to a local professional.
I believe in living generously and helping others when I can. In an effort to pay it forward and support our community, I donate 10% of each client’s monthly retainer to a local non-profit I feel a connection with.
When you work with Breezy Bookkeeping, I can ensure that your books will be professionally regarded with quality management, integrity and respect. Ultimately, I’m here to support you, handle business behind the scenes and be a champion for the growth and success of your business.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have my favorite podcasts I listen to weekly: Conquering Workflows & Systems with Alyssa Lang, The Ambitious Bookkeeper and Profits + Prosecco: The Podcast.
I also have relationships with local CPAs, in which we refer clients to each other. These partnerships are a thing of beauty because we ultimately are creating a smooth experience for our clients when we are able to work together directly.
Finally, a special out to local mentor and colleague Janine Burke of Coastal Accounting & Bookkeeping who has trusted me and helped me to grow through projects and referrals.
