Meet Nicole Novena of CLAY + CRAFT in Cardiff by the Sea, Encinitas and North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Novena.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was first exposed to clay in high school and instantly fell in love. Our little town in Vermont had an amazing ceramics facility. I never thought I would make anything out of it… it was simply enjoyable. It was here that I learned the basic fundamentals of pottery. After college and many years in corporate America, I decided to launch CLAY + CRAFT in 2016 upon moving to California. Years of testing glazes and trial and error has started to pay off as my work has been featured in television commercials, is utilized in restaurants and found in homes across the United States.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
LOL. No… not at all! =). CLAY + CRAFT has been years in the making. Clay operates on its own schedule, it cracks, blows up… etc. It’s not the easiest medium to work with. It’s a tough gig. Because of all this, I try to remind myself that this is for enjoyment. There is something innately in me that wants to create and forces me to keep at it. In time I’ve had some wins and successes that made me realize my talent.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CLAY + CRAFT – what should we know?
CLAY + CRAFT is a collection of modern and timeless ceramics and pottery.

From dinnerware and our newly launched minimalist inspired organic plate line to our drinkware which includes our top selling carafe and cup set, I create thoughtfully designed functional art for the home. Our collection also includes coffee mugs, tumblers, bowls, planters and a beautiful selection of vases. Each piece is a nice balance of modern and minimal design coupled with a natural yet refined handmade feel. It fits with a various home aesthetics and styles.

Everything is handcrafted in my home studio in Cardiff by the Sea, CA.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence. Not only can ceramics be a challenging medium but running a business in itself is filled with highs and lows. I remind myself to stick to the game plan and my husband often tells me to just “Do You” which is a nice reminder and helps me stay the course. Everything takes work.
