Meet Noah Mercer and Michael Fechter of Sullen Eyes in El Cajon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Mercer and Michael Fechter.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our story began when we decided to put together a band based around our personal experiences and struggles. The band started with just us (Michael and Noah), we found our bass player Nestor Nunez who showed us Dakota Cyr who is now our rhythm guitar player and most recently Nick Bedrosian, our lead guitar player. We are a motivated group with a common goal: to create music that is familiar but different and unique. We wanting to stray away from the typical “chuggy” hardcore and go into a more melodic and emotional route.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been so smooth for Sullen Eyes. With members going through drastic life changes such as overcoming addiction, anxiety, depression, and anger. It took us a while to get the band moving due to these challenges we had to overcome. But now we use those events as motivators and inspiration for the music.

Please tell us about your work. What should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our genre would be classified as melodic hardcore while including other elements from all other walks of music such as indie, black metal, rock, hardcore and progressive music styles. We are known for “Hate Yourself Music” due to our lyrics and attitude towards our personal selves. Our songs are based on our personal experiences and using those experiences to create songs that listeners can relate and feel to.

What we believe is what makes us special is how we are trying to make music that’s genuine that also sends a message. Most music in our genre nowadays is all about whos the heaviest, while we try to incorporate more musicality to our songs to create an energy and emotion the listener experiences when jamming along to our music. We want to make music that everyone can get down to appeal to all audiences.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of our career so far has to be our first show. Typically band’s first shows are always rough. But when we played our first show, it all felt real and all of our hard work has paid off. Seeing the amount of people who came to show the support and the positive feedback we received, it meant the world to us and made us feel that we have a chance to actually go somewhere with this project.

It truly made us feel like our work hasn’t been for nothing. Playing the songs and seeing their reactions to songs that we created and care about shows us that we may have something good here.
