Today we’d like to introduce you to None Illa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us None. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For me being an artist stemmed from my love of self-expression. I sang and acted when I was younger, but never thought much of it. After I moved to San Diego in High School, poetry became an outlet. Which eventually shifted to freestyling and battling, and then transformed into falling in love with music all over again.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle was finding out who None illa was. Being creative was never an issue because it’s always been based off self-expression. As time passed, I realized I wanted more and wanted to give more to the industry. The struggle became dissecting the business, learning the politics, and seeing just how large and powerful the music industry is.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a person that helps connect the dots. My artistry has always been intricate, but now I grind with the intention to be a mogul in the same industry that I fell in love with. I consult and help artists connect the same dots, whether it’s helping them get access to relationships and/or resources that they didn’t know they would need or actually stepping into the studio with them for that extra ear/insight that could push their project that much further.
As much as I enjoy pushing the pen and/or dropping a 16 here and there. I understand that not many talented people in my generation who look like I do try to get further than being the “talent.” When it comes to contracts, paperwork, the right way of branding/marketing one’s image, etc… It’s as if you’re speaking a foreign language to most. I’m most proud of having the drive to keep impacting our industry one way or another.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best thing is the diversity. There are so many cultures, so many passionate individuals chasing their dreams, and also a lot of opportunities for people to enjoy their lives.
The one thing that could be improved is our recognition as an entertainment location. It’s always a difficult convo, because essentially LA is only two hours away, and well… A lot of things can be handled by just sliding up the five here and there. But many creatives lack that understanding and fight it. Not to mention, because they don’t have anyone in front of them who has set the blueprint, they continue to keep trying to recreate the wheel.
