Meet Nyame Mariam Danso of Aisha Accessories in Fallbrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyame Mariam Danso.

Nyame, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my business during my first ever sewing class. I fell in love with fashion at a young age while still in Uganda but I acted on it after we moved to the USA and had the opportunity. Modeling was how I was able to experience fashion. I started off with accessories, jewelry stuff that I know I’d wear. Then I ventured into making bonnets. Bonnets are mostly common in the black community because we use them to protect our hair at night. My inspiration was really from my experience at an Asian beauty store. I had gone in to look for a cute bonnet for my then newly braided hair. From the minute I walked, I was followed by an associate around in the store and I could see him watching me to see if I was going to steal something. See, these beauty shops are usually only in black communities and they do this ( following us) because they know we can’t get the products they sell from anywhere else. From that experience on, I never wanted someone to have that much power over me because of what they had to offer. I created my own lane. I made bonnets that were better quality and better for black hair. I created a space for black women to shop in peace and spend money at a place that truly values them. I made products that I needed for my everyday life and in doing so, I build a community of women who had the same struggle.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To say that it’s been easy would definitely be a lie. I operate online so that takes a lot of trust for someone to shop from a small shop. Building trust was the most important part. Another challenge was fitting in in a very diverse industry so having good prices and setting myself apart from my competitors was important.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Aisha Accessories – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Aisha Accessories really is a safe space to shop. I specialize in Accessories and I’m hoping to grow as I go as I finish school. Aisha Accessories is mostly known for our best selling satin-lined African print bonnets and African print accessories. What sets us apart is that we really can relate. I’m a black woman who understands black women struggles and that is something you can’t take away from me. I make sure to go above and beyond for my customers so I have a relationship with them and they trust that their orders will be on time, will be good quality, and will be exactly as seen on the website. What more proud of is seeing my business grow. I talked about starting my business for a while before starting so this is my baby. I’m proud of the impact we have made and can’t wait to see what the future hold.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on launching a ready to wear line in the future and I plan on growing with my Aisha Accessories community. I hope they stick with me for the long run because I have some great stuff planned.
