Meet Jaclyn Carles of Olive & Ever in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Carles.

Jaclyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey into macramé a little over a year ago. I kept seeing more and more macramé wall hangings on my Instagram feed and just absolutely fell in love. I figured I could give it a shot and try to create one of my own and from there, I was hooked. I had originally only made pieces for my home, but a few friends had pushed me to start my own business selling wall hangings (and I’m so thankful that they did!). Seven months ago, I started Olive & Ever, and it’s been, so heart fulfilling!

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think running a small business by yourself can ever be super smooth. You’ll always run into twists and turns that challenge you. When I began, I didn’t think I would ever even get orders. I was shocked to receive my very first one, and then reality kicked in quick. I. Had. No. Way. Of. Shipping. It. I didn’t even think about shipping. Period. I had to figure out boxes, packaging and all that fun stuff. I guess it just never dawned on me.

Sometimes my biggest roadblock is myself. Sometimes I struggle with my creativity. I get so stuck in my headspace, and I’ll create a piece, take a step back, end up really hating it, and having to redo it all over again. That can be such a time suck for me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Olive & Ever – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As Olive & Ever, I specialize in homemade macramé pieces from my home to yours. From wall hangings, to plant hangers, to keychains to wedding/elopement backdrops/installations, I’m pretty versatile and love looking for a challenge. I think I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and how diverse I’ve become in such a short amount of time. I’m not afraid of pushing myself and going past my comfort zone to really create unique pieces.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of San Diego, but I especially love that there are a lot of creatives who conglomerate here. There are just so many talented, passionate people and I find that so inspiring. The one thing I hate the most about our city is the traffic. Having lived in San Diego my entire life, I’ve seen the progression of traffic on the freeways and they’re, unfortunately, getting more and more congested.
