So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My brand represents eclectic men and women! We are an eclectic bohemian clothing brand that is versatile and affordable. The idea of my brand I Am Sublime, started when moving to San Diego, loved the endless summer seasons and able to wear lightweight clothing 24/7! I was shocked on prices for clothing here and decided to go to fashion school to create affordable clothing for locals in California in 2012.
I Am Sublime is amazing because you can easily dress up or down depending on occasion, switch from day to night. The textiles I use are always unique and fun to add that eye-catching look.
I Am Sublime means to be in awh; with who you are; express and love yourself for you. Our brand I Am Sublime is important to learn and discover who you are, and how you feel in the comfort of your own style. I encourage you to be wild, dress how you feel for the day! Be you!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, but if you don’t have struggles you’ll never learn how to get back up!
Since starting my brand, I started with $2000 of all savings and jumped right in head first. I went into the business and thought to myself lets make clothing it’ll be easy! I can turn this money and triple it. The money was spent immediately towards all business items before I even hit the fabric store! Licenses, permits, trademark, etc.
I learned over the last few years that creating your own clothing line is 80% business and 20% fashion. I currently am working check to check from my other profession as a hairstylist of 11 years, but I make it work because I love what I do with both hair and fashion. I went into the business believing in it even if I didn’t have the funds right away, I said I need to start this now or it’ll always just be a thought of regret in my head that I never went for my dream!
My first year in 2017, I thought I had to say yes to every opportunity. I overwhelmed myself my first year, but out of that year I did accomplish 17 different events and created amazing bonds with so many individuals. I learned you can say no, and if it’s meant to be, the opportunity will come back around.
Also, a strong team is what you need for a successful business. I am currently looking for a team to create long-lasting friendships and an eclectic environment, hardworking and who love to be free and dress to impress themselves! I have had interns and helpers throughout the years but mostly have done the work myself.
I believe the biggest challenge for myself is stretching myself too thin, it can wear me down easily and make work much more difficult than it should be.
Please tell us about I Am Sublime.
I started I Am Sublime by myself, I do create everything from scratch. I start with the idea, draw it out, create the pattern, sew it, and advertise. I am very proud of how far I have gotten with doing all the work myself, if I step back and look at the entire company, it amazes me how much work goes into it. The best part is when people love the designs and ask for more!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is traveling and camping with my dad, seeing all the different fashions in all the states we traveled to. My favorite state would be Colorado. There are so many different styles and people. I love how you get the seasons there, winter and summer are the best in Colorado.
