Meet Christian and Kilian Rosier of Patara in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian and Kilian Rosier.

Christian and Kilian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My brother and I started Patara with the idea that one pair of shoes should be light enough to carry in your backpack and versatile enough to blend seamlessly from one setting to the next. We realized there was an opportunity for something higher quality, more sustainable and better fitting than what was being offered by surf brands, not to mention more attainable than a similar shoe offered by luxury brands.

In combining unique and creative textiles with a minimalist travel shoe, we’ve developed a fresh perspective on the way footwear is manufactured and the materials that are used in its development. We are devoted to finding and utilizing the most innovative, versatile and sustainable materials in order to pave the way for a new wave of casual footwear.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have definitely have had our ups and downs since we launched. Manufacturing anything technical, like shoes is always tricky because there are so many pieces that have to come together to create the product you have envisioned. Certain suppliers may not care for the same standard of detail that you have, and there are things that happen that are simply out of our control such as production, shipment or customs delays. Lucky for us we have a great product and our customer base continues to grow with us.

We have started to build out a team to improve on all these aspects and know that the most important thing is to stay true to the environment and quality values we embody as a brand.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
We want to put our spin on timeless designs that are comfortable and fit into someone’s everyday wardrobe seamlessly. Since we are based in San Diego, these designs will be geared more towards the coastal and urban lifestyle but ideal for most settings.

In addition to comfort and design, we really want to change the way people think about what goes into their footwear through a transparent supply chain and radically sustainable and impactful components. We have seen this happen in the apparel industry and since the start of Patara, we have been building products in a thoughtful and less impactful way.

We are proud to create quality, thoughtful footwear using recycled and natural components that have a transparent supply chain.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success by making products that are true to us and that we are proud to put out into the world. We want Patara to be a brand that is known for innovating and people can resonate with.

Our proudest moment so far has got to be seeing people we don’t know on the streets wearing our shoes. Knowing that they enjoy our product is a huge validation to our mission and keeps us going.
