Meet Patricia Hom of Eucalyptus Hills Gallery in East County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Hom.

Patricia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was an art major at Northern Illinois University, with a focus in abstract painting. While in college I started my own painting company in Lake Delavan, WI. I started painting piers and boathouses and eventually worked my way to painting multi level Victorian homes. Wanderlust eventually kicked in and I moved to San Diego in 1983 where the all mighty dollar won and I took a job in a law firm. My career careened toward the focus of finance and I now own my own company providing outsource bookkeeping. As fate would have it, I went back to my roots when I reconnected with a high school friend, and painter, Michael Roser in 2012. Rekindling my love for art, and apparently artists, I sold my condo in Bay Park in 2017, bought a home complete with a 1000 sq ft art studio, and an ADU that came with Sculptor, Fred Briscoe. It didn’t take long for my entrepreneurial side to start Eucalyptus Hills Gallery out in the hills of North/West Lakeside, CA. Together with a painter, Michael Roser, and sculptor, Fred Briscoe, we have built a fine reputation for providing beautiful works of art for home, office, and industry. We have spread our success by helping other artists grow their businesses, as well as teaching abstract painting and stone sculpting to members of our community. Our next Open Studio event is scheduled for Sunday, November 17th from 11 AM to 5 PM. The journey never ends, it grows, and we invite anyone with the love of art to visit us any time!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Perseverance. It’s not just a word, it’s a reality. Selling your home, moving your family, buying a large property and starting a new, unproven business… well, let’s just say faith is a thing. That piece you thought you had sold, that didn’t pan out. That art show you paid $300.00 for a booth space where you sold 1 print for $25. That 1-month long art show at a gallery in La Jolla that didn’t land a bite. And you still have to pay the bills. Those are the struggles. Learning what “works” and what “doesn’t,” those are the challenges. But, the operative word here is learning. Never stop learning and don’t forget to share what you have learned with others.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Eucalyptus Hills Gallery – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Eucalyptus Hills Gallery is a working studio/gallery featuring artists Michael Roser (painter/photographer) and Fred Briscoe (sculptor). What makes us unique is that we create and show all in one space. Fred and Mike share their love of art with others by teaching painting and sculpting on site. Fred also sells raw rock to other sculptors and Universities, which we store on site. I love to share what I have learned about marketing, and the business side of the art business to others just starting out. We market through social media, our website, art shows, gallery shows, and open studio events. At our open studio events, we always invite a guest artist to join us for the day. This year we will have musician Michael Dwyer and photographer Casey Freundt of C&C Images joining us on Nov. 17th. I guess what really sets us apart is our open arms attitude to anyone and everyone interested in art and the support of local art.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The plan is to continue to promote Michael and Fred through improved marketing in all areas of media and fine-tuning our art show selections. The biggest change for the new year is to get that studio space cleaned up and organized! I am the neat freak, and the guys, well… they are working artists after all! It is work in progress, but we made our first dump run a week ago. There’s hope!
