Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Douda.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I discovered my mom’s Nikon SLR when I was in high school, and was immediately enamored by the mechanics and capture of time. It took me a long while to take my first photography course, 24 years old. By 26 I had photographed a couple of weddings, and I was hooked on photographing memorable moments. Thirteen years later I met my love Crystal who was a sister of the groom and a bridesmaid at one of my weddings. Sparks flew, and after a few years Crystal got the same bug for capturing events, only with an eye for video. Now we are set to be a full coverage team here in San Diego.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is photography. Crystal, videography. We both have the approach that the moments we capture are once-in-a-lifetime occasions, and we feel strongly that those moments should look the best they can under any circumstances. These images will be cherished for generations, and that is what inspires us to do the best we can at all times.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Conditions seem rather difficult in my field. There is a huge saturation of photographers in southern California, and tough to stand out. It gets further challenging with the wide range of talents and the effect that has on average prices. With so many photographers out there getting started with low priced offerings, the standard budget for brides and grooms has been dropping. It would be tough to find a “solution” to it, other than the whole photography community making a change. It would also take people looking for photography to become more aware of their specific needs, and wants.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My website has galleries and plenty of examples of photography. Crystal is still building her portfolio, and has samples going up as they come in. The best way to support us is to check out our work if you’re looking to get married, update your family photos, or anything else you might want high-quality images of, personally tailored to your needs.
