Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Najera.
Hi Paul, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started djing early 2000’s. Got my first few gigs playing down in Tijuana and a few years later, I got my first residency in San Diego at Thin/Onyx Room working with a promoter called 4THEDJ. We did a really dope Thursday night where we hosted djs like Green Velvet, Claude Vonstroke, Audiojack and Lee Burridge. From there, I was able to connect with other local promoter and started getting more gigs around town.
In 2015 I started a record label with my friends Jr Quijada and Alex Saludes called Late Night Jackin. We’ve been fortunate enough to work with some really talented artists and have received huge support both locally and internationally.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting the record label was easy. The tough part is getting good music. Most established artists don’t really want to work with an unknown record label. It took a few years before bigger artists starting supporting us.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve recently become one of the new residents djs at Bang Bang alongside Ollie Red and Jesusdapnk. The new owner and management there have been awesome to work with. Their bookings have been top-notch with artists like Danny Tenaglia, Guti, Steve Lawler, Stacy Pullen, Juan Atkins and a bunch more. They’ve also remodeled the main room and added more lighting and sound. If you haven’t been back since it reopened, you gotta come to check it out. It’s a whole different vibe these days.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m Mexican but don’t speak any Spanish. I don’t like hot sauce, I have never tried a Bloody Mary and I hate mayonnaise.
