Meet Paul Schulz of Chula Vista, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Schulz.

Hi Paul, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in 2001. After serving in Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Illinois, I have been serving at Risen Savior Lutheran in Chula Vista since 2014.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a pastor I definitely get to spend time with people when they are at their lowest. But there is so much joy for them, and for me, when the Lord works them through the circumstances to see God’s blessings.

One of the great blessings of serving in this area is getting to know and serve so many military families! Of course, one of the challenges is that they usually move away. While it is always sad to see them go, we take comfort in and find joy in the fact that they will be a blessing in their new location.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have the privilege of telling people the greatest news in the world! I get to share with people that Jesus is their complete Savior. He has done it all for them. He has lived a perfect life in their place. He died on the cross to forgive their sins completely. He rose from the dead to set them free from the fear of death and to give them certainty about the future. When people hear that Jesus has done it all. they are so relieved because we all have the tendency to believe we have to do something to earn God’s favor and our eternal salvation. But Jesus really has done it all for us! And this good news gives us all meaning and purpose in everything we do!

I get to share this good news in various settings. Obviously, on Sunday mornings. But also in hospitals and in homes of shut-ins. I get to share this good news with people who want to know more about our congregation and come in for some classes. I also have the privilege to share this good news as a volunteer at Marine Corps Recruit Depot – San Diego. I also help out Alpine Lutheran in Alpine and get to share that great news there too.

And what a joy it is to serve in such a multicultural setting! Seven different nations are represented in a typical Sunday service. It is a little slice of what heaven will be like!

An additional joy is serving the military families of our community. They make so many sacrifices, and it is such a privilege and joy to be able to serve and help them!

And I must say that I am so thankful for my wife and three daughters who are incredibly supportive and involved!

Here is a list of various things I offer at Risen Savior:
Pre-marriage and marriage counseling, ministry to the military, grief counseling, bible information classes, hospital and shut-in visits, baptism for all ages.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
My parents have an interview from when I was a kindergartener. I said already then that I wanted to be a pastor. Although I probably had my hopes more set on being a Major League Baseball pitcher at the time.
I grew up as a pastor’s kid and I have to credit my dad with helping me to see the joys of serving people with the good news of Jesus. While he didn’t hide the challenges of pastoral ministry, he most certainly let me see the joy!
