Meet Peggy Khayamian and Miriam Allsop of Beyond Concussion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Khayamian and Miriam Allsop.

Peggy and Miriam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Beyond Concussion started as an idea that came from our personal experiences and struggles as a caregiver of a child with post-concussion syndrome. We are two friends connected through concussions our kids suffered. We each have our own yet very similar story.

When concussion symptoms persist and do not respond to conventional medicine, a patient is considered to have post-concussion syndrome. Our children’s concussion journey existed of ER and urgent care visits, doctor after doctor appointments, specialty after specialty, tests after tests. We watched our child sidelined from life living in concussion hell. We filled our time with online searches for answers and therapies, we pleaded with doctors for advice but were left with unanswered questions, and fought to find solutions to their educational needs.

We found some homeopathic remedies and alternative therapies that provided relief. As moms, we give love, comfort, and empathy to the one we love and care for so much. We helped each other in this journey by telling and understanding our experiences. We now want to extend our help to anyone else who is affected by the post-concussion syndrome.

Has it been a smooth road?
We started Beyond Concussion in March 2017. Stepping into the nonprofit world is neither of our expertise. We have come a long way with the support of our community and practitioners. We offered one support group meeting a month. Initially, it was a challenge to find a good location to hold these monthly meetings. However, with the gracious support from the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation and San Diego Chiropractic Neurology, we now hold two meetings a month.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beyond Concussion – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are here to bring awareness to the serious effects of post-concussion syndrome, and to aid people in overcoming their concussions. We aim to provide concussion patients, their family, and caregivers with relevant resources encompassing all aspects of the journey to healing.

Our vision is to be a single point of contact for resources concerning concussion injuries. We understand the struggle in living life with post-concussion syndrome and are reaching out to help and listen to those suffering. We aim to support, educate, and raise awareness for concussions.

What sets us apart is our personal experience with post-concussion syndrome. We offer peer to peer support for patients and caregivers. We focus on adolescents as it seems that they are the ones that fall between the cracks.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is a city all in one. You can have anything you want and it is within your reach. The beaches, the desert, the hiking trails, the mountains, excellent food and entertainment, beautiful weather, you name it, San Diego has it.
