Hi Peter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The BBQUSION journey started when I moved to Imperial Beach back in 2012. I realized quickly that there was no BBQ restaurant anywhere near the area, and the locals always complained about this problem too. Every corner has taco shops, pizza, Thai food, and burgers. Why can’t someone just sell some BBQ at a stand nearby? That was the question, and I came to understand that BBQUSION was the answer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Things were going great up until Covid. Then it was back to a regular job until further notice. Finally, after a couple of years, I decided to get back at it. The second time around I was more prepared and smarter with my planning. Now I have had a better taste of success.

BBQUSION is a mobile food vendor that does pop-ups, farmers markets, festivals, events, and catering. We sell slow smoked meats and sides KC style with a fusion of BAJA. What sets us apart is that we make absolutely everything from scratch including rubs, sauces, dressings, sides, and entrees. Our delicious beef brisket is slow smoked for up to 15 hours using fruit and nut woods. Our burnt ends are described as “meat butter.” We strive to keep our prices reasonable in a market full of overpriced food options. Nobody can beat the quality we of food we sell!

I learned how to cook from my mother, but I learned about business from my Dad, Joel Hengst. He is a highly dedicated family man who set a very high standard of excellence for myself and my siblings. He is proof that hard work, kindness, patience, and a love for your craft will lead to success.
