Meet Phillip Peters of Communication Lab in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Peters.

Phillip, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi, I am Phil and I was born and raised in Chicago. I am a die-hard Bears/Hawks/Cubs fan, and someone who truly enjoys the simple things in life. I love to spend my time watching sports, eating and cooking amazing food and spending quality time with my family and friends. My family moved to AZ when I was 15 years old and after graduating from Arizona State University with a Psychology degree, I was eager to move to California in order to get away from the heat. After relocating to LA, I randomly found a job working with kids with autism. In retrospect, moving to CA was one of the best decisions of my life. Shortly after immersing myself into that field, I quickly realized that this was my true passion and it propelled me to move forward as I wanted to learn everything I possibly could. After two years in LA, I decided to move to San Francisco to obtain my graduate degree in Developmental Psychology. While in San Francisco, I continued to work with kids with autism and focused my energy on researching topics related to autism. Soon after graduating, I injured my knee while playing soccer and tore my ACL which then resulted in me needing to return to Arizona to undergo surgery and recover. During this time, I met my amazing wife which resulted in me staying in AZ and working at a school as a Special Education Teacher. During this time, I decided to continue my research at Arizona State. My wife and I both had a love for San Diego, the cooler weather and living near the beach. So, we ultimately decided to make a permanent move to San Diego where I earned my BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analysis) certification as the Director of an ABA program overseeing an amazing team of behavior therapists. My dream has always been to own my own company where I can help caretakers establish a connection with their child so they can freely express themselves and be independent.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In all honesty, it has been a pretty smooth road. I truly do love working with children and their families. I always aim to help the families that I have the privilege of working with, the best that I can. I also love working with Behavior Therapists and guiding them to be their very best. At times, things can be chaotic and there are frequently difficult situations that occur. However, it is a great time to put my knowledge to the test and work as a team to help find the best solutions to meet the needs of the children that we work with.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Communication Lab – what should we know?
At Communication Lab, we work with individuals with autism. We provide a service called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and work to improve skills in a variety of areas including communication, social skills, and independence with daily living.

What sets us apart is the commitment that we make to propel our Behavior Therapists to be successful as they work directly with our patients on a daily basis. It is our top priority to ensure that our training and protocols are effective and we provide ongoing support regularly to ensure all our patients are making progress.

I am also proud of our programming which makes communicating and self-regulation a huge priority, always striving to be creative and unique in our approach.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have always been surrounded by an incredible support system. I have learned so much from my own parents’ example of selflessly caring and loving people throughout my childhood. Their home was always open to any and all of my friends from all walks of life and that has always been something that I have wanted to emulate in my own life. I have also worked with many remarkable people who have amazed me with their clinical abilities. Of course, my wife is one of the most instrumental supporters in my life. She has supported me as we embarked on this journey together of starting up our own business and continuously plays an integral part of living out our core values. We strive to live our lives with integrity, and being empathetic to others struggles, as we are dedicated to the families that we work with.
