Meet Sara Holt of Pink Feather Photography in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Holt.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story?
So I was basically a little lost in life as we all have been at one point or another. This was like 2010. I was working at a job that I actually enjoyed but I was just working all the time my whole life was kind of consumed by that job. I have always been a creative person I was a dancer for years and still do it, so I needed some freedom of expression in my life. I had a modeled a few times and was always pretty intrigues with the other side of the camera so I thought that might be a fun hobby. I picked up a pretty cheap camera and basically just started photographing any of my friends that would let me. It wasn’t until about three years ago I decided I really wanted to do this full time. It gave me so much freedom to be able to say what I wanted, work with amazing people, not have to work for “the man” and it gave me more time with my family.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! Haha I knew absolutely nothing about business at first and I am still learning. Learning how to be a legitimate business owner has been a real learning process that sometimes has been difficult. Also I think the other challenge for photographers and other creative people is not having a steady paycheck. You really have to learn how to budget and prepare for the slow seasons. The ups and downs of this kind of business are constant I will have a few really great months and then nothing, so that can be a real challenge.

Pink Feather Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
So Pink Feather Photography is a San Diego based company however traveling is always welcome. I specialize in weddings that are real. Real life, real love. Whatever that might look like to my couples. I think the thing that really makes Pink Feather Special is the ability to be able to work so easily with so many types of people. Also my personal love of nature tends to creep up in a lot of my work. I try to use nature as much as possible and create that certain feeling you get when you’re hiking up a mountain or swimming in the sea, there’s a certain freedom you feel and that’s what I try to create in a lot of my work. One of the things I am supper proud of is being a company that is so non discriminative. Whatever your gender, race, or color we say Love is Love always!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
O my gosh I have so many of them haha booking weddings out of state always makes me feel really proud. Like someone found me all the way from Boston and liked me enough to book me. That’s an incredible feeling. I think the proudest moment though was just realizing how far I have come. Having my own business was something I don’t think I ever really thought I could do, but I have it and its thriving and so that just makes me really proud.
