Meet Querriel Madarang of BledRebel Studio in Paradise Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Querriel Madarang.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Querriel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Arts has always been my passion. I started to draw still life and then progress to realism. I loved to learn different mediums like painting, sculpture, drawings. Ever since I was young, I am already creative and had an ardent desire to follow this direction in life. Knowing this, I was able to tailor my education around what I wanted to become. While I was finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, I learned to transfer my skills to the digital platform, and those four years of my life can best be described as a metaphor. As an artist, I also ventured in other media to feed my artistic desires. Photography is one of the media that I focused on, I am interested in taking pictures of different people, capturing their most candid moment to bring out the best flattering images.

My journey in photography started photography when I was eight. I remember my first camera was a cheap point and shoot Kodak film camera, as a kid I was so amazed by the things it can do, freezing people in time… I thought it was magic and that was fun! Later on, in high school, I got a little bit deeper learning the craft and got a better camera, my first SLR, a Konika film with a 35mm lens. This is where I tried and experiment with new things that a point and shoot are not capable of, like the aperture, shutter speed, and all the crazy effects that you can make just by changing some values in your settings and some of the good stuff until I went to college. This where things get more interesting, I have learned and have a better understanding of the technical aspects, like balancing the exposure triangle, composition, I even learned how to make my camera out of a tin can, and how to develop my photographs inside the darkroom is the most exciting part of my photography journey, the experience is what I can compare when I was sitting outside the delivery room, waiting for my child to be born, it was a fascinating experience. I was in third-year college when I transitioned to a DSLR system, At that time, the film is getting a bit out of fashion. So I bought a Nikon D3000, and a couple of lenses, a 50mm, and 35mm primes. Transferring my skills from film to digital is easy because it has the same principles, the only difference is, it’s digital minus the glory of what you experience in film.

After college as my career being a graphic design artist progress and given its a busy and fast phase industry makes me spending less time shooting with my camera, don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, it’s my passion to create art whatever the medium is. I have learned a lot of skills in being a graphic designer for years that helped me to become a better photographer in the years so come.

I came to the US a year ago, I started working a few months after I set foot in San Diego. My job here is different from the industry that I used to work with for more than ten years, months have passed when I started to miss working in the creative industry. So I tried to find jobs that are related to my career, there are lots of them but up north in LA. But I don’t want to go there, for some reason I already fell in love with San Diego, for me, this is my home. So I talk about it with my wife and we come up with an idea of starting a business. Since I am very passionate about photography and I have the skillset and experience, we decided to create BledRebel Studio so I can also share my talent with my fellow San Diegans, that I have a lot to offer them. I want to share my vision and show them a different approach in the said field.

Has it been a smooth road?
It is my dream to make art for a living and I am so passionate about it. Since I already have my skill set, experience, and good equipment, I thought it will be easy to start my own business and fulfill my dreams. So I launched my website and make social accounts to get my business going, I even joined some social media groups hoping to get a good network and clients through it.

But it’s not always black and white when it comes to business. I learned that there were a lot of things that I need to incorporate with it like learning marketing, SEO, website development, contracts, etc. The hardest part is finding a network since I just arrived here in the USA a year ago.

I also find out that it is not enough to have my skill sets alone. You need to attend workshops and seminars to get acquainted with the requirements that a certain service will need, that a photoshoot location sometimes requires a permit that needs to be obtained before the shoot date and so on. Building your own business is never easy, it is very challenging and requires a lot of patience, passion and hard work.

Please tell us about your business.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is the best city to live in! I have never seen so many friendly people, amazing beaches, mouth-watering food and spectacular sunsets that will make you fall in love over and over again. The least I like about the city? I think its the traffic – but it is tolerable. 🙂
